2017 Subaru Impreza: Driving Ease

If I had to pick a word to describe our long-term 2017 Subaru Impreza, it would be “endearing.” There’s something about this car that is much more than how it appears on paper. It isn’t the most powerful, the quickest, or the ultimate anything — it’s just good.

We have the Sport sedan model, and that has a sport-oriented suspension and “torque-vectoring all-wheel drive.” That last one is just a fancy way of saying the car splits up the power and sends it to the wheel or wheels that need it most. At first, this sounds like the kind of thing that’s best experienced on some remote back road or a while pushing the limits of the car on a racetrack — and it is those things. However, in everyday driving, the result is that the car has an ease to its driving character that really reveals itself in mundane day-to-day activities like going to post office, taking a surface-street shortcut to avoid a freeway traffic accident or getting on and off the expressway via a circular ramp (even more fun if it’s banked). The suspension, steering and all-wheel-drive system add a feeling of confidence and an almost uncanny driving dynamic — it’s as if the car knows where you want to go and makes it easier for you to get there.

Also, the car feels remarkably settled in the rain. Our 2017 Subaru Impreza lives in Atlanta, GA, and it’s been raining nearly every day for the better part of a month. I’ve lived in Georgia for five years now, and I’m still amazed at how hard it can rain and how quickly puddles develop. The Impreza handles this without missing a beat.

Yes, the car is fun, and yes, there’s a smooth quality or a refinement to the ride now that the car has been redesigned. But here’s the real deal with this little car — spend a little time driving it and it quickly becomes like a necessary tool. It’s like that favorite kitchen knife or a certain wrench or good half-worn pair of Vans sneakers — it soon becomes something that you just can’t live without. In fact, the new 2017 Impreza is on our list of Must Test Drive Vehicles for 2017. Don’t judge this car by it’s written specs alone. You must drive it to truly get it. Find a 2017 Subaru Impreza for sale
