Although the 2024 Tacoma rang in a new, improved generation of this venerable midsize pickup, there is much to like about the 2023 version and other trucks from the third generation of production (2016-2023). To help evaluate used 2023 Toyota Tacoma models, we polled a few of our reviewers. We culled reader comments to compile a list of favorite features and attributes of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab.
What Are the 10 Things We Love About the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab?
Here’s what we love about the 2023 Tacoma:
- Six trim levels: This list item is one of my favorites because it allows the Tacoma to appeal to a wide range of needs and budgets. Whether you require a midsize truck for work, play, or basic transportation, Toyota has a trim level ideally suited to the task. Six trim levels of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab (SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro) appeal to an array of pocketbooks and requirements. - Holds its value: “The Toyota brand has consistently strong resale value, and the Tacoma is a perennial leader in that category,” said our reviewer Colin Ryan. The Tacoma Double Cab has the best resale value in the midsize truck segment. What is No. 2? You guessed it: the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab.
- Dependable: Toyota dependability is one of the first things springing to mind with our readers when commenting on the Toyota Tacoma. Of the Tacoma, one reader wrote, “Take care of it, and it will last forever! Looks good, runs well, gets the job done!” From another reader, “It’s a Toyota; what more do you want? I’d gladly pay more for a truck that I know is gonna (sic) be dependable for decades.”
- Rugged off-roader: The Tacoma is a ferocious off-roader when properly outfitted. When reviewing the 2023 generation of Tacoma, Matt Degen said, “But while the Tacoma isn’t the most refined midsize truck on sale today, it’s arguably the most fun. It feels like the smaller, more agile truck that it is. Its steering is comparatively responsive, and it feels playfully tossable, especially in the dirt. The Tacoma is a great choice for off-roading and offers two trim levels, the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, tuned for that specific purpose.” From a reader: “This truck is arguably one of the top off-road vehicles, and, of off-road vehicles, it is the most reliable. This truck is also the love of my life.” Awwww. We love how owners love their Tacoma trucks.
- Customization options: Toyota and aftermarket providers offer an almost infinite variety of mods for Tacoma. “The aftermarket and off-road scene of the Tacoma is second to none,” wrote one reader, “and has…absolutely (an) immense amount of different customization options [which is] something else that makes the Tacoma unique from its competitors.”
- Choice of Two Engines: Toyota offered the 2023 Tacoma with a 278-horsepower V6 or a 159-hp 4-cylinder engine. Some TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions have the available 6-speed manual transmission; otherwise, a 6-speed automatic is mated to both engines.
- Comfortable backseat: With its four doors for easy rear-seat access, the Tacoma Double Cab seats up to five. The backseat’s under-seat storage is standard in every Double Cab, providing extra storage and adding a degree of concealed security.
- Composite bed: Anyone who uses the Tacoma for hauling or any other working task will appreciate that every 2023 Tacoma has a standard composite bed. Not only does a composite bed resist corrosion, but it is also less likely to be scratched or dented than a steel bed — a legitimate selling point when shopping for a used 2023 Tacoma.
- Toyota Safety Sense: Even in the base SR trim, the Tacoma provided advanced safety features, including forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam headlight assist.
- Taco: Senior editor of car reviews Joe Tralongo says, “Tacoma owners affectionately refer to their trucks as ‘Taco.’ You can’t go wrong with Tacos.” Indeed. One reader wrote, “Love my Taco … Use it as my everyday driver and to occasionally haul stuff. Great combination of value, reliability, and usability.”
