It wasn’t until 1987, upon the debut of the Porsche 959, that the world was gifted a production sports car capable of the zero-to-60-mph sprint in the 3-second range. Its mid-3-second time was nearly a full second quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo and Buick Regal Grand National, two of its closest competitors when it comes to pure acceleration. Today, the top 10 fastest-production-car zero-to-60-mph times are below three seconds, and the top two cars are sub-2.0 seconds.
You might think the list would be dominated by electric vehicles (EVs), and it’s clear that all that electric torque is put to good use in the zero-to-60-mph dash, but in truth, both hybrids and conventional combustion vehicles are also represented in the top 10. This proves that acceleration is all about grip and power-to-weight ratio, without much regard to the power’s origin.
The times quoted here are the manufacturers’ stated 0-to-60-mph times, except those denoted with a single asterisk (*), which are the manufacturers’ claimed zero-to-100-km/h or zero-to-62-mph times. Boutique and extremely low-volume manufacturers have been excluded from this list.
Here are the quickest production cars when launching from a standstill to 60 mph:
