Best Toyota Sienna Years to Buy Used

Used Toyota Sienna Quick Facts

  • The best Toyota Sienna minivans to buy used are the 2021 and newer models.
  • The Sienna consistently scores high for reliability and resale value.
  • The Toyota Sienna is available with all-wheel drive (AWD), and the newest generation has an efficient hybrid powertrain.

The Toyota Sienna has been around for more than a quarter-century and has earned its place as royalty in the minivan segment. While it’s now offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, earlier generations delivered V6 power, and all Sienna models since the second generation have been available with all-wheel drive. The minivan segment is small, but competition is fierce, making it difficult to decide between a Toyota Sienna and a competing model. We’re here to help with this overview, which covers specs and notable features for each generation. Let’s get started.

What Is the Best Model-Year Used Toyota Sienna?

While they are generally the most expensive used Sienna models available, minivans from the latest fourth generation make the best pre-owned purchases. They offer up to 36 mpg combined from a standard hybrid powertrain but don’t give up on capability, with a 3,500-pound towing capacity and weather-conquering all-wheel drive. Toyota also does a great job with standard safety tech, giving the Sienna a long list of advanced driver-assistance features by default and offering others in higher trims. If your budget doesn’t support the latest and greatest Sienna options, the third-generation vans still offer many advanced safety features at a much lower price.

Toyota Sienna by Generation: Which Should You Buy?

Fourth Generation: 2021-Current

2024 Toyota Sienna in white.

Larger and more sophisticated than the van it replaces, the fourth-generation Sienna offers everything you could want in family transportation. The standard 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain produces 245 horsepower and returns a remarkable 36 mpg combined EPA fuel economy figure. Upgrading to the all-wheel-drive option only drops fuel economy by 1 mpg. Trims include the economical LE, comfortable XLE, sporty XSE, luxurious Limited, ultra-plush Platinum, and off-road capable Woodland. The LE and XLE offer seating for up to eight, while the more expensive trims add second-row captain’s chairs that reduce passenger capacity to seven.

The fourth-generation Toyota Sienna (2022 model year) minivan specifications by trim — LE, XLE, XSE, Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum. Built on the TNGA-K platform, the fourth-generation Sienna is hybrid-only, pairing a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine (189 horsepower) with electric motor-drive for 245 combined net horsepower, an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT), and a choice of front-wheel drive or Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) that adds a dedicated rear electric motor. EPA-estimated fuel economy is an outstanding 36 city / 36 highway / 36 combined mpg for front-wheel drive and 35/36/35 mpg for AWD. Every Sienna rides on a 120.5-inch wheelbase, measures about 203.7 inches long (204.1 inches on XSE), 78.5 inches wide, and 68.5 inches tall, with a 0.28 coefficient of drag, an 18.0-gallon fuel tank, up to 101.0 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the first row, a 3,500-lb maximum towing capacity, and seating for 7 or 8. Curb weight ranges from about 4,610 lbs (LE) to 4,725 lbs (Limited and Platinum). Wheels range from 17-inch alloys on LE and XLE to 18-inch on Woodland and Limited and up to 20-inch on XSE and Platinum. The Sienna carries a Nickel-Metal Hydride hybrid battery backed by a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty. This table compares the hybrid powertrain, chassis, dimensions, interior room, fuel economy, and capacities across all 2022 Toyota Sienna trims.

Third Generation: 2011-2020

2018 Toyota Sienna front left

The third-generation Toyota Sienna had a nearly 10-year run, so you should have little trouble finding a well-maintained used model. Roughly the same size as the second-generation Sienna, the third-gen van offers more safety, driver-assist features, and more. Until 2013, the Sienna’s standard engine was a 187-hp 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, which may feel somewhat underpowered for those who regularly load up their vans. Thankfully, a V6 was available and became standard later on.

The third-generation Toyota Sienna (2018 model year) minivan specifications by trim — L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. Every model is powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve D-4S V6 with Dual VVT-iW intake and VVT-i exhaust, producing 296 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 263 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm, paired with a Direct Shift 8-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and standard front-wheel drive, with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with active torque control available on the LE, XLE, and Limited. All trims share Toyota Direct Ignition, D-4S fuel injection, an 11.8:1 compression ratio, MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars, electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Brake Assist (BA), and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). The Sienna rides on a 119.3-inch wheelbase, measures 200.6 inches long and 78.1 inches wide, with a 20-gallon fuel tank, up to 150.0 cubic feet of cargo volume, a 3,500-lb maximum towing capacity, and seating for 7 or 8. FWD curb weight ranges from about 4,430 lbs (L) to 4,615 lbs (Limited), and AWD models weigh up to 4,750 lbs. EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at 19 city / 27 highway / 22 combined mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 18 city / 24 highway / 20 combined mpg for AWD. Wheels range from 17-inch alloys on L, LE, and XLE to 18-inch on Limited and AWD models and 19-inch on the sport-tuned SE. This table compares engine, transmission, chassis, dimensions, interior room, fuel economy, and capacities across all 2018 Toyota Sienna trims.

Source: 2018 Toyota Sienna Product Information (Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.). Feature availability reflects the 2018 model year and may vary by drivetrain (FWD/AWD), package selection, and region.

Legend: S = Standard, P = Available as a stand-alone option or part of a factory package (e.g., SE Preferred, XLE Navigation/Premium, Limited Premium), — = Not Offered. Higher trims include the standard equipment of lower trims except where superseded. The third-generation Sienna (XL30) spanned the 2011–2020 model years; this table reflects the 2018 model year.

Model-Year Changes:

2020: The Nightshade appearance package debuts.
2019: Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay join the Sienna roster.
2018: The big highlight is the Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist suite, more USB ports, and a Bird’s-Eye View Monitor for the Limited trim.
2017: The Sienna gets a more powerful V6 engine and a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
2016: No significant changes.
2015: The Sienna receives a modest exterior refresh and a few new interior upgrades.
2014: A blind-spot monitor becomes optional on the SE trim.
2013: Toyota drops the Sienna’s 4-cylinder engine and makes the V6 standard. Limited trims gain a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, which are optional on the SE and XLE.
2012: The XLE gains a power passenger seat and auto on/off headlights.

Second Generation: 2004-2010

2010 Toyota Sienna

The second-generation Toyota Sienna is much larger than the original. It offers more interior room, more power from its standard V6 engine, and sliding side doors with integrated power windows. Eight-passenger seating includes a flush-folding third-row seat, making it easier to expand the cargo area. Newly available safety and driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, front-seat side-impact and side-curtain airbags, vehicle stability control, and all-wheel drive. Trims include the CE, LE, XLE, and XLE Limited.

The second-generation Toyota Sienna (2005 model year) minivan specifications by trim — CE, LE, XLE, and XLE Limited. Every model is powered by a 3.3-liter DOHC 24-valve VVT-i V6 producing 230 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 242 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, paired with a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive (ECT-i) transmission and front-wheel drive, with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) available on the LE, XLE, and XLE Limited. All trims share Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI), a unitized body with anti-vibration sub-frame, MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars, variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering, a tight 36.8-foot turning circle, and four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The Sienna rides on a 119.3-inch wheelbase, measures 200.0 inches long, 77.4 inches wide, and 68.9 inches tall, with a 20-gallon fuel tank, up to 148.9 cubic feet of cargo volume, a 3,500-lb maximum towing capacity, and seating for 7 or 8. Curb weight ranges from about 4,120 lbs (CE) to 4,365 lbs (AWD). EPA-style mileage is rated at 19 city / 26 highway mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 18 city / 24 highway mpg for AWD. CE and LE ride on 16-inch wheels (P215/65R16), while the XLE Limited upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels (P225/60R17). This table compares engine, transmission, chassis, dimensions, interior room, fuel economy, and capacities across all 2005 Toyota Sienna trims.

Note: The second-generation Sienna (XL20) was built for the 2004–2010 model years; this table reflects the 2004–2005 powertrain (3.3L V6 / 5-speed automatic), which was revised to a 3.5L V6 with a 5-speed automatic for 2006. AWD models use run-flat tires and are not offered on CE. Mileage figures were determined by Toyota (EPA estimates were not available at time of the brochure’s posting) and are not comparable to current EPA ratings.

The second-generation Toyota Sienna (2005 model year) minivan notable features by trim — CE, LE, XLE, and XLE Limited. First Generation: 1998-2003

1998 Toyota Sienna on the road.

The first Sienna replaces the funky but much-loved Previa minivan. It displays a more traditional style, is powered by a V6 engine, and offers seating for up to seven. The Sienna impresses with its additional airbag protection and excellent crash test scores, but its reputation for reliability is somewhat marred by an engine oil sludge issue.

The 2001 Toyota Sienna minivan specifications by trim — CE, LE, and XLE. Every model is powered by a 3.0-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) producing 210 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 220 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, paired with a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive (ECT) transmission and front-wheel drive. All trims use distributorless Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI), a unitized body with anti-vibration sub-frame, MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension, variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering, power-assisted ventilated front disc / rear drum brakes with standard Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), and earn an EPA-estimated 19 city / 25 highway mpg. The Sienna rides on a 114.2-inch wheelbase, measures 194.2 inches long, 73.4 inches wide, and 67.3 inches tall, with a 40.0-foot turning circle, a 20.9-gallon fuel tank, seating for 7, up to 133.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, and a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs standard / 3,500 lbs available. The CE rides on P205/70R15 tires with a temporary spare, the LE adds a full-size spare, and the XLE upgrades to P215/65R15 tires on 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Curb weight ranges from 3,919 lbs (CE) to 3,932 lbs (LE and XLE). This table compares engine, transmission, chassis, dimensions, interior room, fuel economy, and capacities across all 2001 Toyota Sienna trims.

Should You Buy a Used Toyota Sienna?

The Toyota Sienna offers strong reliability and resale value, and available all-wheel drive sets it apart from its closest rival, the Honda Odyssey. While the van has had fewer issues than many other models, we’d still recommend looking for a certified pre-owned option from a franchise Toyota dealer. That can provide a longer warranty and a thorough pre-sale inspection of vital systems and components.

See certified pre-owned Toyota Sienna minivans for sale near you.

Is the Toyota Sienna Reliable?

Yes. The Toyota Sienna has a strong reputation for dependability and durability. There have been a few issues with the newer hybrid models’ software, and the 2017 and 2018 models have accumulated transmission complaints, but the van remains one of the more reliable options in its segment.

Used Toyota Sienna Model Years to Avoid

The first-generation Sienna had some oil sludge buildup issues due to improper maintenance. We would also be cautious of the second-gen, again mainly because of its age and the lack of advanced safety systems. If you’re buying anything older than 10 years, you’ll want to have the vehicle checked out by a reputable mechanic. Be aware that all cars with high mileage and many years on the clock are likely to need repairs, as even the best-engineered parts eventually wear out.

What Is the Maximum Number of People a Sienna Can Hold?

Base CE, LE, and XLE trims can seat up to 8 people, with the XLE offering 7-passenger seating via optional second-row captain’s chairs. The more expensive trims accommodate seven.

How Much Can a Toyota Sienna Tow?

The Sienna has always had a tow rating of 3,500 pounds, but only when equipped with the trailer package and, on the first three generations, the V6.

What Kind of Gas Mileage Does the Sienna Get?

The fourth-gen Sienna gets exceptional mileage, averaging 36 mpg with front-wheel drive and 35 mpg with all-wheel drive. The older models with V6 engines don’t come anywhere near that, with combined EPA figures hovering around 22 mpg (or 20 mpg with all-wheel drive). The second-generation 4-cylinder didn’t fare much better, earning 21 mpg combined.
