Best Volkswagen ID.4 Years to Buy Used

Used Volkswagen ID.4 Quick Facts

  • 2024 and newer ID.4 RWD models are best for range up to 291 miles, a stronger rear motor, and improved infotainment and climate control. 2023 is a solid value.
  • Ride is comfortable, safety tech is strong, DC fast-charging from 5%-80% takes about 30-40 minutes depending on battery pack, and AWD tows up to 2,700 pounds.
  • Check recalls, confirm fast-charge specs for the exact trim, and note Supercharger access with Magic Dock and planned NACS adapters.

A used Volkswagen ID.4 has a lot going for it, but there are a few years that are better than others. The ID.4 comes equipped with a lot of standard equipment, yet when new, it touted a lower price than many competitors. Like many EVs, the ID.4 experiences notable depreciation, so you’ll likely find a used model also comes at a much lower cost. VW tuned the ID.4 to be quiet and comfortable, and many owners give it high marks in both areas. Early versions had a limited range of about 260 miles. They also have their fair share of complaints, especially with some electronics and the infotainment system. For this reason, we like the 2024 and newer models, although the 2023 is also a good choice — it just lacks some of the upgrades that make us like the 2024 better.

What Is the Best Model-Year Used Volkswagen ID.4?

For its combination of improved range, better reliability, and better electronics, we like the 2024 and newer ID.4. The 2023 also has better range and improved quality over the first two model years. Still, it lacks the 2024 model’s battery, infotainment, and climate control upgrades. 2023 is also the first year of production at VW’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. One downside for the ID.4: adapter-based access to Tesla Superchargers is rolling out for VW in 2025. However, some of Tesla’s Magic Dock Superchargers include a CCS1 adapter that works with the ID.4.

Volkswagen ID.4 by Model Year: What Do You Get?

First Generation: 2021-Current Volkswagen ID.4

The first-generation ID.4 is still current, having launched in 2021 with three trims: Pro, Pro S, and First Edition. The Pro and Pro S get pushed by their rear wheels and a single electric motor, but offer the option of dual electric motors and all-wheel drive. Power for the first two years comes from an 82-kWh battery pack, ranging between 260 and 275 miles depending on the year. After 2024, the range increases to 291 miles. In 2023, VW offers a less expensive ID.4 with a 62-kWh battery and a range of 209 miles.

The Pro comes nicely equipped and has gained more standard equipment over the years. It includes 19-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, heated washer nozzles, and rain-sensing wipers.

The cabin features power-operated heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, multicolor ambient interior lighting, proximity keyless entry and start, a 10-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, front and rear USB-C charge ports, and a 6-speaker audio system.

Standard driver assists include forward collision warning and emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, and adaptive cruise control. Also standard are automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview monitor.

The Pro S adds adaptive LED headlights, poor weather lights, a lighted front grille bar and VW logo, power-folding side mirrors, a panoramic glass roof, 12-way power front seats with power lumbar, leatherette upholstery, 30-color enhanced ambient lighting, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 12-inch color touchscreen.

High-end audio fans will be disappointed to know that such an option was not available on any trim before the 2024 model year. An optional Harman Kardon system is available on newer S Plus models.

All-wheel-drive models can tow up to 2,700 pounds, while the rear-drive versions can pull 2,200 pounds.

The ID.4’s DC fast charging rate is up to 125-175 kW, depending on its year and battery pack — 62-kWh models at about 140 kW and 2024 models with 82-kWh packs up to 175 kW. That typically yields a 5%-80% charge in 30-40 minutes. A Level 2 at-home 240V charger takes seven to eight hours to reach full charge and about five hours for a 20%-80% charge.

Model Year Changes:

2025: VW changes the name of the Pro trim to Limited, and the Pro S Plus gains more features.
2024: The Pro gets a standard 82 kWh battery and a 291-mile range (263 with all-wheel drive). The standard infotainment touchscreen grows to 12 inches, and Pro and Pro S get a 12.9-inch screen with backlit sliders. VW also makes much-needed improvements to climate controls.
2023: A new base model with a 62-kWh battery and 209-mile range joins the lineup, along with the Pro S Plus, which features standard all-wheel drive and more equipment. New equipment includes a 12-inch touchscreen, Park Assist with five memory settings, and new wheels.
2022: The range for the rear-drive model increases to 275 miles.

Is the Volkswagen ID.4 a Good Car?

The ID.4 earns high marks for quality, comfort, and price. Initially, its range is at best considered middle of the road, but by 2024, it does a better job of competing with models like the Tesla Model 3 and Kia EV6. If there’s a fly in the ointment, it’s the early models’ electronics. There are numerous complaints about the touchscreen interface, such as freezing or resetting. The climate controls also receive some complaints, but mostly for their unfriendly interface (a problem VW resolved with the 2024 update).

The ID.4 has had multiple recalls. Always run the VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to check for open recalls before buying.

Can the Volkswagen ID.4 use a Tesla Supercharger?

Adapter-based access to Tesla Superchargers is rolling out to the VW Group. For the ID.4 in North America, access using a NACS DC fast-charging adapter is expected in 2025, but has been delayed. However, some newer Tesla Magic Dock Superchargers wth built-in CCS1 adapters will work with the ID.4. Currently, there are only about 50 such stations, but Tesla is adding more. Check the Tesla app and VW communications for location and adapter availability before a trip.

How Long Does the ID.4 Battery Last?

Volkswagen says the ID.4’s battery should last between 10 and 15 years and anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Many factors can affect battery life, including its charging history, climate, and maintenance. As the pack grows older, it won’t just die overnight but rather slowly degrade, meaning it will hold less of its charge over time. Volkswagen warranties its battery pack for 8 years or 100,000 miles and kicks in if the battery drops below 70% capacity.

What Are the Most Reliable Years for the Volkswagen ID.4?

We’d go with the 2023 or newer, although none of the ID.4 years are so bad that we’d say avoid them. The 62-kWh battery doesn’t have much in the way of range, but if your daily driving habits stay within the 150- to 200-mile range, a used base model can save you a bundle. If budget allows, 2024 and newer models have the updated rear motor and improved infotainment and climate UX.

Should You Buy a Used Volkswagen ID.4?

The ID.4 is attractive on several fronts. It offers a lot of technology for a reasonable price, and its resale figures are not stellar, meaning you can get a good deal on a late model, low-mileage version. VW’s warranty may still be in place, meaning any arising oddball electronic issues should be covered.
