Toyota’s certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty offers 1 year or 12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage from the day you buy the car, along with 7 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage from the original sale date.
What We Like
Long powertrain warranty; special finance rates; free Carfax report; fully transferable; no deductible
What We Don’t
Average bumper-to-bumper warranty; powertrain warranty starts from original sale date
If you’re interested in buying a new Toyota without spending new-car money, Toyota’s certified pre-owned program is worth a look. It offers a nearly new vehicle with a fully manufacturer-backed warranty for added peace of mind.
How does Toyota’s CPO program work? Available on used Toyota models up to 6 years old and fewer than 85,000 miles on the odometer, the program provides two different warranties. The first is a bumper-to-bumper plan that offers full vehicle coverage for 1 year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. The second is a powertrain-only warranty that covers the car for up to 7 years or 100,000 miles from the original sale date. That’s an increase of 2 years and 40,000 miles from the original powertrain warranty.
Toyota’s CPO program offers some other key benefits too, such as a free Carfax report included with every vehicle. In addition, the warranty is fully transferable to a new owner. There is a $50 deductible, which means that every repair is covered under warranty for a nominal fee. But, 24/7 roadside assistance is included.
Our complaints about Toyota’s CPO plan? Considering how reliable Toyota’s cars are known to be, we think the bumper-to-bumper warranty could be a little longer. One year of coverage is good, but Toyota’s upscale Lexus brand offers 3 years of coverage. Why can’t Toyota do that?
We’re also a little disappointed by any warranty that starts on the date the car was originally purchased. Since a certified pre-owned warranty is for a second or third owner, keeping track of the original purchase date can be a pain.
Still, Toyota’s CPO warranty is one of the better plans among mainstream automakers. In fact, we think it beats out such rivals as Ford, Honda and General Motors, none of which offer quite as much coverage as Toyota. Find a CPO Toyota for sale
