Volkswagen’s certified pre-owned (CPO) program is one in which you can’t tell the players without a program. It offers three different CPO warranties based on model year or type of vehicle. This is further compounded by VW’s change in its new-car limited warranty for 2018, increasing the original new-car coverage from 3-year/36,000-mile to 6-year/72,000-mile.
We sort out the details below in Program Specifics, but the overview is 2017-and-older models provide a CPO warranty adding 2 years and 24,000 miles to whatever remains of the original new-car limited warranty. Model-year-2018 vehicles get a 1-year/12,000-mile of extra CPO coverage. TDI versions from 2016 or earlier get a 2-year/unlimited mileage CPO warranty. Other CPO benefits include a 3-month trial of SiriusXM radio, a free Carfax report, and 24-hour roadside assistance.
What We Like
3-month SiriusXM trial; 24-hour roadside assistance; special financing rates
What We Don’t
No extra powertrain warranty; confusing model-year-based warranty coverage, $50 deductible per visit
If you’re considering a used Volkswagen, you might think about choosing a model with a certified pre-owned warranty, an additional warranty beyond the new-car factory terms that’s been certified by the automaker. So what does VW’s CPO warranty offer?
When VW updated its original new-car limited warranty for 2018 models, it caused a trickle-down effect to CPO coverage. Basically, CPO warranty coverage for 2017 model year and older VW vehicles remained unchanged. CPO vehicles provide 2 years and 24,000 miles extra limited-warranty coverage in addition to whatever remains of the original 3-year/36,000-mile original limited warranty and the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. This equals 5 years or 60,000 miles of coverage from the original new-car purchase date.
VWs from 2018 and newer provide a CPO warranty for 1 year and 12,000 miles. This is tacked on to whatever remains of the original 6-year/72,000 new-car warranty. This new-car warranty is comprehensive and includes elements typically covered in a separate powertrain warranty. In essence, the CPO warranty increases coverage to 7 years or 84,000 miles, whichever comes first.
VW models with the TDI engine receive a 2-year/unlimited mileage warranty that picks up where the original 3-year/36,000 mile warranty leaves off.
Unfortunately, there are a couple of downsides to VW’s CPO warranty. Not only is there a $50 deductible per visit, but VW’s CPO program also doesn’t offer additional powertrain coverage beyond the brand’s original 5-year or 60,000-mile warranty for older models. But while a lack of extra powertrain coverage is certainly a drawback, VW’s certified pre-owned warranty offers more additional bumper-to-bumper coverage than the vast majority of its rivals, including Honda, Ford, Toyota, and Chevrolet. This is even more true for 2018 and newer VWs.
With that said, there are several benefits to VW’s certified pre-owned warranty. In addition to a 100-point inspection for all CPO Volkswagen models, the warranty includes 24-hour roadside assistance, a free Carfax report, and SiriusXM radio. And there are sometimes special financing rates that give shoppers an extra edge over a typical used car.
Although Volkswagen’s certified pre-owned program isn’t perfect, we do think it offers some strong benefits for shoppers interested in getting extra peace of mind with their used car. As a result, we believe it’s worth a look if you’re shopping for a pre-owned Volkswagen.
