BMW CPO Program: Video Overview

Buying a used car can be stressful, and buying a used luxury car even more so, as the simplest repairs can be quite expensive. That’s where buying a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle could ease your mind, save you some money and help you get into the car you’ve always wanted. Let’s take a look at what you get when buying a certified pre-owned BMW.

In order to qualify for BMW’s certification, vehicles must meet several requirements. First, the dealer ensures the vehicle has an excellent maintenance history and genuine BMW parts while also thoroughly reviewing the Carfax report. Should there are be any issues with the vehicle, BMW will not certify it. The automaker also requires the vehicle be no more than 5 model years old and have less than 60,000 miles on the odometer. BMW technicians then do a road test and a very thorough inspection of the car inside and out. If something isn’t up to their standards, it gets reconditioned, repaired or replaced with factory-authorized parts. This helps rule out any mechanical issues with the engine, transmission or any other major system.

BMW offers two levels of certified pre-owned protection. The first includes bumper-to-bumper coverage, which essentially extends BMW’s new-car factory warranty by 2 years and 50,000 miles for a total of 6 years or 100,000 miles. This is an excellent warranty, but keep in mind it starts on the date the original owner bought the car.

The second warranty is called "The Elite Program" and is for newer vehicles with less than 15,000 miles on the odometer. The CPO Elite plan adds only 1 year and 25,000 additional miles of coverage to the factory warranty, bringing the total to 5 years or 75,000 miles. However, BMW says that this plan usually ends up covering cars for a longer period of time because they’re so new when they originally qualify.

Should you have an issue with a certified vehicle, there’s a $50 deductible to pay and you can take it to any BMW dealership for repairs. The certified pre-owned warranty is fully transferable while also adding value should you decide to part with your car later. Additional benefits include 24-hour roadside assistance, complimentary loaner vehicles and special financing and lease rates.

So while a luxury certified pre-owned vehicle may cost a bit more than other used cars, it offers plenty of peace of mind and that’s hard to put a price tag on.
