GMC Terrain (2nd Generation: 2018 - Current)

Dimensionally, there is little difference between the second- and first-generation Terrain. Still, the newer version has a quieter cabin, better ride and handling, and far more high-tech features. All-wheel drive is optional on all but the base SL trim. Advanced driver assists like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and a blind-spot monitor are available but only sometimes standard, so check the options list before you buy. If you're a fan of adaptive cruise control, skip the 2018 model, as GMC doesn't offer it until 2019. As for unexpected features, the Terrain delights with a touchscreen infotainment setup with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a push-button transmission gear selector (frees up more space in the center console), proximity keyless entry with push-button start, and a huge storage compartment under the rear cargo bay floor. Optional equipment includes a safety-alert seat that vibrates to warn of a possible collision and a parking assistant that can parallel- or perpendicular-park automatically.

Model Updates: The 2019 Terrain offers adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree monitor, and a high-definition rearview camera. Model year 2020 removes the diesel engine option, while driver aids like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist are made standard. An optional V6 serves up robust acceleration, making the Terrain one of the most powerful compact SUVs of its day. It also bumps the max tow rating to 3,500 pounds. The Terrain’s cabin is roomy and comfortable, aided by a rear seat that slides eight inches fore and aft, providing either more legroom for passengers or cargo space behind the seat. Features on the first-generation Terrain include Bluetooth, ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, navigation, a programable rear liftgate, a Pioneer audio system, and a rear seat DVD entertainment system. If you're looking for advanced driver-assist systems, they don't show up until 2013.

Model Updates: The 2013 Terrain gets a new V6 with even more power. A new Denali trim joins the lineup, offering options like a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection. The SLT gains automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning. The 2015 Terrain sees improvements to its infotainment system, gaining a Wi-Fi hot spot. A modest exterior refresh and expansion of the Denali’s driver-assist system to the SLE and SLT trims arrives for 2016.
