Over the years, the Camaro has evolved, growing larger and slower, then returning to its smaller, more powerful roots. Chevrolet Camaro (6th Generation: 2016 - 2024)

Key Improvements: The sixth-generation Camaro builds off the fifth’s style and size but on a newer, stiffer, lighter, and more powerful platform. Unchanged are features like a choice between coupe and convertible, a tiny rear seat, and narrow side windows that hamper outward visibility. Engine options range from a tire-scorching 650-horsepower LT4 supercharged V8 to a 275-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder producing as much power as some older generation V8s. In between is a 335-hp V6 and a 455-hp Corvette-derived V8. In addition to higher quality cabin materials, the sixth-gen Camaro offers better driver assists, like a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane departure warning. However, the Camaro lacks advanced features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Trims include the base LS, the popular LT, the performance-oriented SS, and the power-happy ZL1. Notable available features vary by trim and include a limited-slip differential, a Track Pack, Brembo brakes, an adaptive suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, Recaro sport seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and proximity keyless entry.

Model Updates: For 2017, a pared-down track-ready 1LE trim and fire-breathing supercharged ZL1 join the lineup, and then, in 2018, the pair join together to form the ZL1 1LE. 2019 brings an upgraded infotainment system, a front-end refresh, and an available 10-speed automatic for the SS. That same 10-speed is offered with a V6 in 2020, which also sees Recaro sport seats join the Camaro’s options list. 2021 brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 2022 lessens the number of trims equipped with the 1LE package, and 2024 brings the curtain down with a special Collector’s Edition. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is also dropped.


Chevrolet Camaro (5th Generation: 2010 - 2015)

Key Improvements: The fifth-generation Camaro ends a 7-year dry spell. Compared with the fourth-gen car, the Camaro is smaller and nimbler, with vital styling elements lifted from the original 1967 Camaro. Trims include the LS, LT, and SS, with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions, and two engine choices: a 304-hp V6 or 400-hp V8 (426 hp with the manual transmission). The retro theme carries over to the interior, touting an available 4-gauge cluster at the console’s base. A coupe and convertible also carry over, but features like the previous generation’s glass hatchback and removable T-tops do not. With this generation, you’ll find more electronic performance upgrades, such as stability and launch control. Some available options include a Boston Acoustic’s audio system, a short-throw Hurst shifter, and 21-inch wheels.

Model Updates: A convertible version joins the fleet in 2011, while 2012 brings the high-performance supercharged ZL1. Also new for 2012 is a 45th Anniversary Edition, more power from the base V6 (323 hp), and an available rearview camera. 2013 sees several upgrades, starting with the track-ready 1LE package. The MyLink touchscreen infotainment system and hill-start assist for manual transmission models get added. For 2014, the Camaro gets a new face and trim: the 505-hp Z/28.


Chevrolet Camaro (4th Generation: 1993 - 2002)

The fourth-generation Camaro improves on the third-gen car, using the same platform and overall shape but with a more robust chassis, horsepower, and safety features, including a passenger-side airbag, traction control, and standard antilock brakes. The standard V6 puts out 160 hp, which later climbs to 200. The Z/28 and SS trims come with a 275-hp V8 with output climbing as high as 330 hp on some models. During this time, GM installed its Skip-Shift manual transmission, which automatically skips from first to fourth gear when shifting at a low rpm. In 2002, slow sales and an aging design force GM to pull the plug.


Chevrolet Camaro (3rd Generation: 1982 - 1992)

The third-generation Camaro begins a move to restore the car's reputation as a performance machine. Its body radically differs from the second-generation Camaro, with an aerodynamic front end, wide glass hatchback, and an available convertible. During this period, the first 5-speed manual transmission shows up, as does the range-topping IROC-Z, featuring unique wheels and graphics, an upscale interior, and a 215-hp V8. Other engine options in these years included a 90-hp 4-cylinder and a 112-hp 6-cylinder with manual or automatic transmissions.


Chevrolet Camaro (2nd Generation: 1970 - 1981)

The second-generation Camaro came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. In 1970, the Camaro received praise for its powerful V8 engines, dynamic handling, and sleek exterior. Over the years, the Camaro retained its good looks and adept handling. Still, thanks to EPA fuel economy and emissions standards, power slowly dwindled to a low of 190 hp for the most powerful V8. During its decades-long run, new features like removable glass T-tops, power windows, cruise control, and 4-wheel disc brakes are introduced. New trims like the Berlinetta, Type LT, and Rally Sport bring more colors, fancy wheels, and taped-on stripes. After all, it was the era of disco, bell bottoms, and feathered hair.


Chevrolet Camaro (1st Generation: 1967 - 1969)

Chevrolet created the first Camaro to answer the wildly popular Ford Mustang. Available as a coupe or convertible, the Camaro offers three trims: Super Sport, Rally Sport, and Z/28. In 1969, the SS trim joined the group. The base Camaro has a 140-hp straight six, but numerous optional V8s deliver horsepower ratings from 180 to 375. Although it only lasted three years, the '67-'69 Camaros are some of the most highly sought-after 60s-era cars, capable of fetching up to six figures at auction.
