Small cars don't have to be dull or cramped. That's the philosophy behind the Honda Fit. Classified as a sub-compact car, the Fit is surprisingly roomy and versatile. It also sips gas and has an excellent repair and reliability record. While the Fit is still sold around the globe, we here in the U.S. only had it for a relatively brief period. That can sometimes be an issue for a used car, as parts may be challenging to find. Fortunately, the Fit shares many of its parts with other <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/honda">Honda</a> vehicles, so finding OEM parts for repair shouldn’t be an issue. During the Fit's life, Honda introduced an EV model, but as they built less than 1,200 units, we'll stay focused on the gas-powered version.

Honda Fit (3rd Generation: 2015 - 2020)

Key Improvements: The third-generation Fit is larger than the first, with a longer wheelbase and substantially more rear-seat legroom (4.8 inches more). In fact, it had more rear legroom than the larger Honda Civic of this period. It has a more powerful engine than its predecessor but admittedly a heavier body, so performance is about the same. However, fuel economy increased from up to 31 mpg combined to up to 36 mpg combined. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Carrying over are important Fit features like its rear Magic Seat, which has lower seat cushions that fold up, creating a tall and generous second-row storage space. An available navigation system, unusual in a car like the Fit, also carries over but with a larger screen and better interface. Inside the cabin you'll find available satellite radio and, on EX-L trims, leather seating surfaces and heated front seats. Options include a power sunroof, Honda LaneWatch camera-based blind-spot monitor, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, and a 180-watt audio system. 2018 and newer Fit models offer the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assists, which include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. In another unusual move for an economy car, Honda spent the money to make the Honda Sensing system available for cars with either an automatic or manual transmission.

Model Updates: The Fit continues without change until 2018 when the Honda Sensing driver-assist suite drops onto the available equipment list. This year also sees a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, more sound-deadening insulation for a quieter cabin, and a retuned rear suspension. The 2019 Fit adds automatic high-beam headlights to cars equipped with Honda Sensing. In 2020, Honda dropped the Honda Sensing option from the LX and Sport, and navigation is no longer offered.


Honda Fit (2nd Generation: 2009 - 2013)

Key Improvements: The second-generation Fit makes an excellent used car. It's more stylish than the original, with a slightly more powerful engine, a longer body, and a few more features. Sure, it doesn't have some modern equipment found on the third-generation Fit, but its simplicity is refreshing. And it costs less, too. There's little to go wrong here; just your basic solid Honda-engineered car with a small engine, great gas mileage, nimble steering, and the choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The Fit has only two trims: base and Sport. The tall cabin and clever features like the Magic Seat make the little Fit a versatile vehicle. It has complete airbag protection, air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors. Move to the Sport trim, and you'll get cruise control, a 200-watt 6-speaker audio system, 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and paddle shifters on cars equipped with the automatic transmission.

Model Updates: The 2011 Fit gets more standard equipment, including electronic vehicle stability assist, cruise control, and remote keyless entry. Honda did not sell a standard Fit for the 2014 model year -- only a limited-production electric model called the Fit EV.


Honda Fit (1st Generation: 2007 - 2008)

The original Fit is like a slimmed-down version of the second-generation car. Simple and sparse, it nevertheless serves its purpose. Frugal on gas, with a roomy and versatile cabin, the Fit and Fit Sport make great used cars for anyone on a budget or just needing a reliable daily commuter.

Model Updates: The 2008 Fit gets a tire-pressure monitoring system.
