Honda HR-V (2nd generation: 2023 - Current)

Key Improvements: The second-generation HR-V is longer, wider, and more agile than the first. It sees several improvements addressing customer criticism, chief among them being horsepower, ride, and handling. You’ll also find the interior fit and finish a considerable step up. Opt for a 2023 or newer HR-V and even the entry-level LX comes with equipment once optional or unavailable in the previous generation. The group includes a digital instrument cluster, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic climate control, and an improved Honda Sensing driver-assist suite with Traffic Jam Assist and traffic sign recognition. New available features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 9-inch touchscreen, and a wireless charging pad. One omission from the newest HR-V is the first generation’s Magic Seat, which offered owners more versatility when carrying passengers and cargo.

Model Updates:: Starting with the 2025 model year, the Sport and EX-L trims gain as standard a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection.

Honda HR-V (1st generation: 2016 - 2022)

The first-generation HR-V offers a few features no longer available in the latest version. If you're a fan of rowing your own gears, you can get a 6-speed manual transmission, but only on front-drive models. The versatile interior includes a second-row Magic Seat with a bottom cushion that flips up and locks in position, creating more space for loading tall items. The front passenger seat folds flat, increasing overall cargo-carrying capacity. Every first-generation HR-V has cruise control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth device connectivity, and an AM/FM/CD stereo. More expensive trims offer a power moonroof, heated front seats, leather upholstery, touch-sensitive climate controls, a power driver’s seat, and a navigation radio. No one ever accused the first-generation HR-V of being too quick, but neither is it too slow for its intended purposes.

Model Updates: Significant changes happen in 2019 when the HR-V gets a mid-cycle makeover featuring revised styling inside and out. The Honda Sensing driver-assist suite is made standard on the EX and higher trims, which also gain adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, Honda LaneWatch, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. In 2021, the Sport trim gains rear privacy glass.
