Hyundai Tucson (4th Generation: 2022 - Current)

Key Improvements: The current Hyundai Tucson is superior to the third-generation model in every way. It is larger, more sophisticated, and more luxurious. In addition to the standard gasoline engine, there's also the choice of hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The standard 4-cylinder engine has 187 horsepower and returns a city/highway combined fuel economy estimate of 28 mpg (25 mpg with all-wheel drive). <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/hybrid/hyundai/tucson">Hyundai Tucson Hybrid</a> and <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/plug-in-hybrid/hyundai/tucson">Tucson Plug-In Hybrid</a> models put out more power from a turbocharged engine and electric battery combo and attain up to 38 mpg combined fuel economy.

As for technology, the fourth-generation Tucson excels both under the hood and in the cabin. Replacing traditional instruments is a digital gauge cluster; touch controls operate the infotainment, heating, and ventilation. Oddly, opting for the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen drops the wireless component for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on the trim, you'll find a heated steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and a Bose audio system. Hyundai builds off the previous generation’s driver-assist systems, adding semi-autonomous driving, remote self-parking, adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, intersection assist, and reverse automatic braking.

Model Updates: For 2023, Hyundai drops the SEL Premium Package and adds the 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen to more trims. In 2024, new standard safety equipment includes rear side airbags, a blind-spot monitor, and steering-wheel haptic feedback for the lane-keeping assist.


Hyundai Tucson (3rd Generation: 2016 - 2021)

Key Improvements: Although it shares similar exterior dimensions with the previous Tucson, the third generation better utilizes interior space, adding 5 additional cubic feet to the cargo bay. The base engine remains a rather inadequate 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine temporally replacing the previous 2.4-liter, which returns in 2019. Compared to the base 2.0-liter engine, the turbo makes more power and gets the same fuel economy, rated at 25 mpg combined. Drive-assist systems such as automatic emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor appear on early models, with more advanced systems like adaptive cruise control, a driver attention monitor, and lane-keeping assist in the final years of its run. Features you won't find on the second-generation Tucson include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a wireless charge pad, and an Infinity audio system.

Model Updates: For 2017, Limited trims gain Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Eco and Sport trims gain rear air vents. The 2018 Tucson SEL and higher trims gain heated front seats, SiriusXM, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The SEL Plus gets an 8-inch touchscreen and Infinity audio, while the Limited gains a heated steering wheel. New standard features for 2019 include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A 2.4-liter normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine replaces the 1.6 turbo.


Hyundai Tucson (2nd Generation: 2010 - 2015)

The second-generation Tucson is a radical departure from the first. Where the original Tucson appears chunky and clad in lots of tacked-on plastic bits, the second-gen is sleek and modern. The interior is vastly better, with more soft surfaces and optional equipment, including navigation, a rearview camera, and a panoramic power moonroof. Hyundai drops the V6, offering either a 165-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or a 176-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine.


Hyundai Tucson (1st Generation: 2005 - 2009)

As first attempts go, Hyundai did a good job with the Tucson. Its upright, blocky design resembles a mini Jeep Grand Cherokee, and its 7.8-inch ground clearance and available V6 engine make it perfectly suited for light off-road excursions. Find a well-maintained Limited, and you'll get heated front seats, Bluetooth, and a power sunroof.
