While a <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/car-shopping/buying-hybrid-car" target="_blank">hybrid vehicle</a> uses a small electric motor at low speeds, above 30mph the hybrid’s gasoline engine takes over. Plug-in hybrids use a gasoline engine, a battery, and a larger more powerful electric motor similar to those found in an <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/car-shopping/should-you-buy-an-electric-vehicle-or-a-plug-in-hybrid" target="_blank">all-electric vehicle</a>. During their acceleration, a PHEV uses only its electric power and the gasoline engine takes over only when the battery is almost empty. While a PHEV electric-only range is around 11 to 55 miles, PHEV owners don't need to worry about this limited EV range like electric car owners do. With a larger battery compared to a hybrid, PHEVs can't recharge using <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/car-shopping/regenerative-brakes-improve-range" target="_blank">regenerative braking</a> alone, hence the need to recharge using an outlet like their EV counterparts. The larger batteries in a PHEV can be costly to replace so some shoppers may lean towards buying a vehicle that is still under warranty although federal guidelines mandate all batteries come with a 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty. PHEVs now come in all types of vehicle classes, including compacts, sedans, crossovers, minivans, and even luxury SUVs. Many car shoppers in this segment will probably wonder if they should get a <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/car-shopping/plug-in-hybrid-buying-guide" target="_blank">plug-in hybrid or a traditional hybrid</a> and there are pros and cons to both.
