Toyota GR86 (2nd Generation: 2022 - Current)

Key Improvements: The second-gen GR86 offers more power and better handling, addressing some of the first-gen car’s shortcomings. Built with a stiffer chassis, the GR86 derives power from a 2.4-liter flat-4 boxer engine good for 228 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, with a 6-speed automatic as optional. Along with its improved performance, the second-generation GR86 includes advanced driver aids, such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, reverse automatic braking (automatic only), and lane departure warning. Upgrades for this generation include a larger 8-inch multimedia touchscreen, sport seats with larger bolsters, a digital gauge cluster, and a limited-run Trueno Edition featuring Sachs shocks, Brembo brakes, and custom interior and exterior styling elements.

Model Updates: 2023 brings a limited Special Edition. For 2024, Toyota Safety Sense driver aids become standard on both manual and automatic models.


Toyota 86 (1st Generation: 2017 - 2020)

The first <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/toyota/86">Toyota 86</a> is a carryover from Toyota’s now-defunct Scion brand, where it was named the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/scion/fr-s">Scion FR-S</a>. Because it shares a platform with the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/subaru/brz">Subaru BRZ</a>, the 86 uses that car’s boxer engine, in this case, a 2.0-liter flat-4 generating 205 hp (200 hp with the automatic transmission). Combined fuel economy is 27 mpg with the automatic and 24 mpg with the manual. The 2+2 coupe features a tiny back seat that folds down, allowing access to the trunk. Performance features include a limited-slip rear differential, sport shocks and springs, and 17-inch wheels. The GT trim adds dual-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, and push-button start.

Model Updates: For 2018, a new GT trim adds leather upholstery to the lineup. 2019 sees a TRD trim, while 2020 adds the Hakone Edition, standard Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
