The Toyota Matrix is a compact, small, 5-door hatchback based on the Toyota Corolla, that debuted for the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2003/toyota/matrix" target="_blank">2003 model year</a>. The Matrix came about as a partnership between Toyota and GM, with the latter producing the "sister" vehicle known as the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/pontiac/vibe" target="_blank">Pontiac Vibe</a>. The base Matrix featured a 130-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/toyota/matrix/xrs" target="_blank">Matrix XRS</a> had a peppy, engine shared by the Lotus Elise capable of producing 180 horsepower that was paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/toyota/matrix/s" target="_blank">Matrix S</a>, which our editors preferred over all others, had a 2.4-liter inline 4 cylinder engine along with <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/awd-4wd/toyota/matrix" target="_blank">all-wheel-drive</a>. The interior featured a surprisingly larger-than-you'd-expect 49 cubic-feet of cargo space when the split rear seat was folded down.
