The Toyota Prius Prime takes the hybrid concept in a new direction, combining the best attributes of an electric vehicle (EV) and gas-powered car. Unlike the Prius, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) Prius Prime can charge overnight, providing enough power to carry it short distances before the gas engine kicks in. Fuel economy mileage estimates in the high-40s to mid-50s are impressive enough. Still, if your daily commute doesn’t exceed the Prime’s electric range, you could conceivably never need to fill your gas tank again.

Toyota Prius Prime (3rd Generation: 2023 - Current)

The most noticeable improvement to the third-generation Prius Prime is its styling. Where the previous generation looks a bit like a commonplace 4-door hatchback, the current Prius Prime has a sleek, sporty, fetching appearance. The third-generation Prime improves over the previous one with a greater EV range (up to 44 miles), more power (220 horsepower), and better fuel economy (up to 52 mpg combined). The Prime has three trims: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. The SE is the most efficient due to its smaller tires and lighter weight. The third-gen Prius Prime has a more sophisticated interior, with a larger touchscreen interface and the instrument cluster moved from the center of the dash to in front of the driver. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both here. There are more safety systems like Proactive Driving Assist, lane-keeping assist, a digital rearview mirror, parking assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. Rounding out the upgrades are heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power liftgate, and a fixed glass roof.


Toyota Prius Prime (2nd Generation: 2017 - 2022)

Key Improvements: The second-generation Prius Prime is more streamlined than the first. Although it shares the same wheelbase, the second-gen gives up nearly two inches in rear-seat legroom and a somewhat decreased overall volume due to the lower roofline. Cargo volume, however, is more significant. The battery technology is better, too, so much so that it more than doubles the Prime’s electric-only range to 25 miles. The body is more rigid, the handling is better, and the choice of interior materials is superior. New features for the second-generation Prius Prime include Toyota Safety Sense P as standard, which adds automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, auto high-beam headlights, and lane departure warning. New upgrades include a larger touchscreen interface, improved Entune audio, a heated steering wheel, remote climate control, and wireless charging.

Model Updates: For 2020, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa join the infotainment system, but not Android Auto, which arrives in 2021 and only then on the base LE trim.


Toyota Prius Prime (1st Generation: 2012 - 2016)

The original Prius Prime is based on the Prius, commonly known as the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/toyota/prius">Toyota Prius</a> PHEV. It shares almost all of its exterior and interior components with the Prius. The original plug-in hybrid can only travel about 11 miles on battery power, but the added battery size helps with fuel economy, with a combined 50 mpg rating. Much of the equipment found on the second-gen Prius Prime is also here, only parceled out over five trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not part of the deal.
