Founded in 2009, a reference to Florida’s Indian River where founder R.J. Scaringe grew up, Rivian became the first company to launch a fully electric truck to the U.S. market in September 2021. The R1T has four electric motors, comes only in a 4-door crew cab body style and one choice of bed length but boasts an impressive mileage range of between 250 – 400 miles, depending on which of the three battery sizes you select. The R1T was initially offered in three versions: Explore (base), <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/rivian/r1t/launch-edition" target="_blank">Launch Edition</a>, and <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/rivian/r1t/adventure" target="_blank">Adventure</a>. We think the 11,000-towing capacity, sports car-like acceleration, and nearly 1,800-pound payload capacity should be able to handle almost any workload you’ll need. In August 2022 the company announced the Explore grade would be discontinued due to low sales demand. Among Rivian’s backers are Ford and Amazon, who combined to invest $2.5 billion, and Autotrader’s parent company Cox Automotive, who invested $350 million. The company’s trucks have earned praise, attention, and awards;  our editors named the R1T one of the ten best electric vehicles for 2022. Although there are starting to be more choices in the electric truck category, Rivian’s electric trucks are pushing the boundary of what’s possible.
