The 2020 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility in Sterling Gray is a purpose-built law enforcement vehicle. It features heavy-duty mechanicals, ballistic-rated door panels, a column-mounted shifter, and a reinforced structure engineered to withstand 75 mph rear-end crashes. Standard engines include a 3.3L V6 Hybrid or a 3.0L EcoBoost V6, both with AWD. 3.3L V6 Hybrid (standard, generating 318 hp) or the optional 3.0L EcoBoost V6 (around 400 hp) for high-speed pursuit performance. Heavy-duty intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with unique calibrations designed to handle aggressive maneuvers and poor weather conditions. Upgraded police-calibrated heavy-duty brakes, heavy-duty suspension, and severe-duty engine/transmission oil coolers. Police-specific front seats with built-in steel intrusion plates, and durable, easy-to-clean vinyl rear bench seats. Heavy-duty vinyl/rubber floor covering to accommodate hosing or easy wiping of debris. Column-mounted shifter and an open center console area designed specifically to mount aftermarket police radios, laptops, and equipment consoles. Heavy frame reinforcement and an industry-first 75 mph rear-impact crash rating. Optional Level III or Level IV ballistic-rated driver and front passenger door panels. Sensor-based system that monitors the vehicle's rear and sides for hidden movement, automatically locking the doors and rolling up windows if someone approaches the vehicle.Features allowing the engine to idle continuously to power sirens and lights without leaving the vehicle vulnerable to theft (officers can remove the key and leave the vehicle running).
