The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Is Secretly Exceptional

Author: Matt Degen.

Finally, I’ve found a car that checks a crazy number of boxes, with features that could fulfill almost every need and desire the typical car shopper might want. SUV practicality? Check. All-wheel drive (AWD)? Yep. So far, these are common. How about 42 mpg combined? Now we’re onto something. Oh, and it has nearly 200 horsepower, starts under $30,000, and is made in America – Alabama, to be precise. It has all the latest safety tech as standard equipment, such as adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. It can be optioned with conveniences like a power tailgate and premium JBL audio system.

Let’s dispense with the mystery: I’m talking about the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Toyota’s entry-level and now-smallest SUV deserves some serious love. That was my main takeaway after spending several days in one during a recent trip to Texas – where Toyota’s headquarters happens to be based.

Corolla Cross Background

The Toyota Corolla Cross went on sale in 2022. It slotted between the C-HR and the RAV4 in Toyota’s lineup. The C-HR then left the lineup, and the Corolla Cross is its much-better replacement as the entry into Toyota’s SUVs, the kid brother to the popular RAV4. The Corolla Cross Hybrid came along only last year, and for my money – and probably yours – I think it’s the one to have. It’s a bit pricier than the standard model, but it’s money well spent. The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid starts at $29,570, including destination, versus $25,210 for the standard, gasoline-only Corolla Cross. There are some big howevers, however.

First off, the Corolla Cross comes with all-wheel drive. That’s $1,300 extra on the standard Corolla Cross. The hybrid Corolla Cross is also more powerful, making 196 horsepower versus the 169 hp of the standard model. And then, of course, there’s the fuel economy. While the standard Corolla Cross is more than respectable, with ratings of 31 mpg city/33 highway and 32 mpg combined, the Corolla Cross Hybrid earns 45/38/42 mpg.

During my time in the hybrid, those numbers were right on the money. And they pay off — literally. According to the Annual Fuel Cost calculator on the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov site, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid’s annual gasoline cost is $1,150. A standard AWD Corolla Cross burns up $1,650. If you drive a Corolla Cross Hybrid for six years, fuel cost savings alone can make up the difference in price between it and a standard AWD Corolla Cross.

Beyond the Metrics

So far, I’ve spit out a lot of numbers and data to argue for the merits of this little vehicle. Here’s an easier way to understand its goodness: Just get in and drive the thing. The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is a great little runabout. I piloted it on Texas freeways alongside pickups and semi trucks routinely doing over 70 mph, in tight city confines, and on even tighter country backroads. The Corolla Cross Hybrid never lost its cool, nor did it ever feel underpowered or overwhelmed, especially in a place where the state vehicle seems to be a jacked-up, heavy-duty truck.

Its hybrid system produces the same power as the well-regarded gas-electric powertrain in the latest Prius, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with all of that other new hybrid’s latest driver assistance features, including Toyota’s uncannily good Proactive Driving Assist. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s wireless Apple CarPlay worked seamlessly and was a cinch to sync. The front seat kept me comfortable, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel felt good in my hand. All functions, from climate controls to audio volume, were a breeze to use. Physical buttons for the win.

If you’ve got some bucks to spare, the Corolla Cross Hybrid can be stuffed with some excellent features. My test model was the top-line XSE, which was further loaded with amenities like a power liftgate, moonroof, 9-speaker JBL premium audio system, and adaptive front lights. Oh, and mudguards. Because Texas, I guess. Total cost, including destination fee, came out to $35,320. That’s actually a great deal in today’s market.

How Is This the Only One?

So the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid isn’t just good — I’ll go as far as to say it’s exceptional for what it is. As a small SUV, it provides the high seating position and AWD grip that many drivers seek. As a hybrid, it gets enviable fuel economy – especially every time gas prices spike. So how in the world is the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid the only such vehicle in its segment?

That, perhaps, is another one of its biggest surprises. The subcompact SUV category is vast, with contenders like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Subaru Crosstrek, and Mazda CX-30. Yet none of its rivals offers the kind of gas-electric powertrain in the Corolla Cross. Yeah, you could mention the Kia Niro, but let’s be real: It’s more of a hatchback, and it doesn’t offer AWD. If it ain’t got AWD, it ain’t an SUV in my book.

So let me let you in on something: The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is secretly exceptional. It’s still so new that perhaps it just isn’t as well-known as others in the Toyota lineup. Or maybe an influx of other headline-grabbing Toyota models like the new Land Cruiser and Tacoma grabbed all the limelight last year. But the fresh Corolla Cross Hybrid also deserves to bask in that glow.
