1997 AUDI A4 COMPETITION - RALLY CAR CAR #339 " REBUILT 1.8L TURBO " 01E CLOSE-RATIO TRANSMISSION " LSD " 034 ENGINE MANAGEMENT " FULL CAGE " OMP COMPETITION SEATS THIS IS NOT AN A4 WITH RACING DECALS. What began life as a 1997 Audi A4 has been transformed into a purpose-built competition machine. The cabin has been stripped and caged, the turbo engine rebuilt, the drivetrain substantially reworked, and the suspension and braking systems upgraded. The result is raw, mechanical and tremendously entertaining. DOCUMENTED ENGINE BUILD The engine underwent a documented teardown and rebuild by Mtech Automotive Consulting, including removal, disassembly, inspection, machine-shop work and reassembly. KEY BUILD HIGHLIGHTS " Mahle Motorsport 1.8L Pistons " Aftermarket Turbocharger " APR Exhaust Manifold " Custom Exhaust " Carbonio Carbon-Fiber Intake / Airbox " Walbro 450 Fuel Pump " Serviced Injectors " Timing Belt & Water Pump Service " 034 Standalone Engine Management " Audi 01E Close-Ratio Transmission " Limited-Slip Differential " Upgraded Front & Rear Sway Bars " Aftermarket Front Brake System " Full Competition Roll Cage " OMP HTE-R 400 Competition Seats " Multi-Point Racing Harnesses " MOMO Corse Steering Wheel Included " Dedicated Ignition / Start Switchgear " Auxiliary Gauges " Competition Fresh-Air System " Hood Pins & Front Tow Point " Bridgestone Tires " New Windshield The documentation identifies an aftermarket turbo fitted to an APR exhaust manifold but lists its size as unknown, so we will not invent a turbo specification or horsepower figure. 01E CLOSE-RATIO TRANSMISSION The drivetrain is equally serious. Documentation records the Audi 01E close-ratio transmission, brackets, shift assembly and differential installation, with additional build records identifying an LSD. WHY I LIKE THIS CAR I think the starting procedure is half the fun. You settle into the OMP seat, secure the harness, look through a cabin filled with cage tubing, gauges and switchgear, and begin bringing #339 to life. Switches are flipped, systems come online, ignition is armed, and the rebuilt turbo engine fires. This isn't theater added to make an A4 look like a race car. It's part of operating a machine built for competition. THE EXPERIENCE Get into boost and you hear the turbo spool, followed by that unmistakable release when you come off throttle. The chassis feels glued to the road, the upgraded brakes feel serious, and everything feels direct and mechanical. Steering, throttle, boost, braking and gear selection demand participation. You hear more, feel more and become part of what the car is doing. PURPOSE-BUILT Inside is a stripped competition environment with substantial roll-cage structure, OMP seats, harnesses, auxiliary instrumentation, dedicated electrical controls and competition ventilation equipment. Outside, #339 wears white bodywork with black and red graphics, hood pins, tow hardware, modified front bodywork and competition-style wheels. There are scratches, exposed hardware and places where function won over finish exactly what you would expect from a working competition machine. MY TAKE The parts list is impressive, but what makes this Audi special is what those parts created together. You climb in, strap yourself down, work through the switches and fire it up. It whistles, spools, releases boost, vibrates and communicates. Sometimes an interesting automobile is an exotic V12 or preserved classic. And sometimes it's a 1997 Audi with a roll cage, rebuilt turbo engine and #339 on the door. This may be one of the most entertaining cars we've had.
