2017 Toyota 4Runner The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is a body-on-frame midsize SUV built around traditional truck-style durability and genuine four-wheel-drive capability. Part of the fifth-generation 4Runner, it stands apart from most contemporary crossovers with substantial ground clearance, a naturally aspirated V6, low-range gearing on 4WD models, and a strong emphasis on off-road use. Toyota Pressroom Powertrain and capability Every 2017 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 producing 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive versions have 9.6 inches of ground clearance, while maximum towing capacity is 5,000 lb; depending on trim, the 4WD system is either part-time or a full-time system with a locking center differential. Toyota Pressroom Off-road character The 4Runner's defining feature is its ladder-frame construction, complemented by a four-link solid rear axle and coil springs. The 2017 lineup included SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and Limited grades; the TRD variants emphasized trail capability, while Limited shifted toward road comfort and luxury. Toyota Pressroom Everyday tradeoffs Its old-school engineering gives the 4Runner a distinctly different character from car-based SUVs: rugged and useful off pavement, but less sophisticated in areas such as drivetrain technology and active safety. Depending on configuration, seating for up to seven was available, making it capable of combining family duty with towing and recreational use. Toyota Pressroom Safety IIHS rated the 2017 model Good in the original moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength, and head-restraint tests, but only Marginal in the driver-side small-overlap test. Its headlights received a Poor rating, and automatic vehicle-to-vehicle front-crash prevention was not available important differences compared with substantially newer SUVs.
