THE STORY BEHIND "417" The Mille Miglia 417 pays tribute to an incredible chapter in Mercedes-Benz racing history. In 1955, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL entered Italy's legendary Mille Miglia, one of the world's most demanding endurance road races. The car carried race number 417 and started at 4:17 a.m. Driven by American privateer John Fitch, with co-driver Kurt Gessl, the 300 SL completed the roughly 1,597-kilometer route from Brescia to Rome and back in 11 hours, 29 minutes and 21 seconds. Against purpose-built racing machines, the production-based 300 SL finished 5th overall and 1st in the production sports-car class. Mercedes-Benz created the Mille Miglia 417 Edition 60 years later as a tribute to that remarkable achievement. And that's where the 417 comes from the historic race number AND the 4:17 a.m. starting time.
