The Soul's hatchback wagon layout gives you genuine versatility rear seats that fold flat, a tall roofline that creates airy headroom for all passengers, and a cargo area that surprises people every time they open the hatch. This is a vehicle that lives up to its practicality in the real world, not just on a spec sheet. ===== 2017 Kia Soul Performance and Engine ===== Under the hood sits a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a smooth 6-speed Sportmatic automatic transmission, driving the front wheels. Kia's Sportmatic transmission gives you the option to shift manually when you want a more engaged driving experience, while the automatic mode handles daily stop-and-go traffic effortlessly. Inside, the Soul's cabin feels roomy in a way its footprint doesn't suggest from the outside. The upright seating position gives you a commanding view of traffic ahead, and the rear seat offers legitimate adult legroom. The cargo area behind the rear seats is one of the most usable in the segment, with a flat load floor and practical dimensions for everything from grocery runs to weekend camping gear. ===== Kia Soul Reliability and Ownership ===== The Kia Soul has built a strong reputation for dependability, and the 2017 model year is considered one of the more refined iterations of the second-generation platform. Consumer satisfaction ratings for this generation are consistently high, with owners frequently praising low repair costs, a comfortable ride, and a cabin that holds up well over time without rattles or premature wear. The 2.0-liter engine in the Soul + is particularly known for being low-stress and long-lived. It lacks the complexity of turbocharged engines, meaning fewer expensive repairs down the road.
