The 2001 Toyota Tundra SR5 Access Cab is a full-size pickup from Toyota's first Tundra generation. It is identified by the SR5 trim and the Access Cab body style, which gives it a two-door cab with additional rear seating space behind the front row. The truck uses the simple, durable proportions typical of early-2000s pickups, with a tall hood, upright windshield, and a bed that is separate from the passenger compartment. On the outside, the bodywork is straightforward and functional, with large side mirrors, clear glass, and a front fascia designed around Toyota's truck styling of the period. Access Cab models from this era are known for the extra rear access built into the cab area, and that detail is part of what distinguishes this version from a regular cab. The painted finish, wheel openings, and bed rails follow the clean, squared-off lines common to the model year. Inside, the SR5 trim provides a more complete set of convenience equipment than the base versions of the truck. The cabin includes front bucket seating with a center console arrangement between the seats, along with a rear bench area accessible through the smaller rear doors. The dashboard uses large, easy-to-read controls and simple switchgear, which was common in Toyota trucks of this period. Air conditioning is part of the equipment on many SR5 examples, and the truck generally includes power steering and power brakes as standard equipment. Depending on the exact build, the instrument panel may also include factory gauges for vehicle speed, engine rpm, fuel level, and coolant temperature. Storage areas are built into the doors and the center portions of the interior, and the seating surfaces, trim panels, and headliner reflect Toyota's practical approach to light-truck interiors in the early 2000s. The driver sits high relative to the road, and the upright glass area gives a clear view forward and to the sides. The Tundra line for 2001 was offered with Toyota's 4.7-liter V8 in many SR5 Access Cab trucks, and that engine is the most notable powerplant associated with the model. When paired with the automatic transmission commonly fitted to these trucks, it gives the pickup a smooth, uncomplicated driving character. Rear-wheel drive examples were sold, and four-wheel-drive versions were also available, depending on how the truck was originally equipped. The chassis uses a body-on-frame design, with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle arrangement typical of half-ton pickups of that era. Disc brakes were used at the front, with rear braking hardware matched to the truck's duty. Steering is by recirculating ball or similar truck-oriented hardware of the period, which is consistent with the model's size and intended use. The truck's powertrain and running gear were built to handle daily driving, towing, and hauling within the limits established by the factory equipment. The bed area provides the working space expected of a pickup from this class, with a broad cargo floor, straight inner walls, and an open tailgate. Tie-down points and bed hardware may be present depending on how the vehicle was ordered and used, and the cargo box was offered in more than one length during this generation. The suspension tuning, wheel-and-tire selection, and frame construction give the Tundra a substantial feel on the road, while the Access Cab adds flexibility without changing the truck's fundamental job as a hauler. Exterior details on SR5 models can include color-keyed trim elements, step-style running boards on some trucks, and alloy wheels when specified, though each of those items depends on the individual vehicle. The truck's proportions, engine choice, and cab access arrangement give it the same straightforward character Toyota aimed for across the early Tundra range, with equipment that is easy to identify and use without added complexity.
