2019 Chevrolet Silverado: Choosing the Right Trim

Completely redesigned, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is re-engineered from the ground up. This pickup is the fourth-generation Silverado. It’s larger and better overall.

It’s bigger, more comfortable, and less fuel-thirsty than the Silverado it replaces. It features more passenger space and loads of available advanced safety tech.

We like the reimagined Silverado’s bounty of engine choices, abundance of cargo space, ingenious towing features, and smooth ride. For the first time on any pickup truck, you can raise or lower the power tailgate with the key fob when appropriately equipped.

Chevy separates the Silverado into eight grades. They are anchored by the Work Truck (WT) and crowned by the High Country. Arranged between them are Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, and LTZ.

You may choose a Regular Cab (WT only), Double Cab, or Crew Cab. Depending on the cab style, Chevy offers three cargo-box lengths.

A 4.6-liter V6, two versions of the 5.3-liter V8, a 2.7-liter turbo 4-cylinder, a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder turbodiesel, and a 6.2-liter V8 comprise the engine lineup.

Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard on all but the Trail Boss trims. Standard on the Trail Boss trims and optional on all other trims is 4-wheel drive (4WD).

2019 Chevrolet Silverado WT (Original starting price when new: $28,300)

2019 Chevrolet Silverado WT

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado WT starts at $28,300.

The listed price and the content description is for the WT Regular Cab RWD.

Standard on the WT and Custom grades is the 285-horsepower 4.6-liter V6. Chevy marries it to a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT). The EPA-estimated fuel economy for combined city-highway driving is 17 mpg.

Serving as the engine option is the 355-hp 5.3-liter V8 paired with the 6-speed AT. Thanks to cylinder management, its estimated combined mileage is also 17 mpg.

The WT is a fairly basic unit with manually operated outboard mirrors, windows, and door locks. The seat covering is vinyl, and the floor is covered in rubber.

A corner bed step, 17-inch steel wheels, auto on-off headlights, a 40/20/40 split front bench seat, and a tilt-only steering wheel are standard.

Also included are air conditioning and a USB port.

The infotainment system includes Chevy’s Infotainment 3 system with a 7-inch touchscreen, a 2-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Opting for either the Extended Cab or Crew Cab includes a 6-speaker audio system, power windows and power door locks, and Teen Driver.

To increase the content, Chevy offers the WT Convenience Package. It includes remote keyless entry, the EZ Lift power lock-and-release tailgate, cruise control, power heated outboard mirrors, and more.

Who is this trim for? The WT is aimed at buyers who simply need a basic truck. Other than the somewhat impressive infotainment system, it’s a bare-bones package.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado WT includes:

Auto on-off headlights – Photosensors detect a reduction in daylight, which automatically engages the headlights and taillights. The system extinguishes the lights when an appropriate amount of daylight returns.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through your vehicle’s media system.

Available remote keyless entry – Using the fob, you can unlock and lock the vehicle remotely when in range.

The price listed is for the Custom Double Cab with the standard cargo box. You can upgrade to the Crew Cab with either the standard or short cargo box.

The Custom grade adds the features mentioned in the WT Convenience Package, as well as LED taillamps, carpeted floors, and deep-tinted glass.

Also standard are 20-inch aluminum wheels and cloth seating.

Who is this trim for? A buyer on the hunt for a fairly basic truck with a second-row seat and a few necessities like cruise control and power windows will like the Custom trim.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Custom includes:

Cruise control – This is also called “speed control.” You can lock the system to that speed when you reach the desired speed. The vehicle will maintain that speed until you engage the brakes.

Heated outboard mirrors – Electrically heated, these mirrors automatically clear away ice, snow, and fog.

Cloth seating – More appealing to look at and sit on, cloth seats are a definite step up from vinyl.

Wi-Fi hot spot – A 4G LTE hotspot, it allows passengers to stream and share online on their smartphones.

EZ Liftgate – You can lift this specially engineered tailgate closed with ease. Its design includes a hidden spring that tightens as the tailgate lowers, allowing it to lower more slowly.

The Silverado RST is a solid balance of price and content, which equals value. We’d also opt for the Crew Cab and the Safety Package.

  • Which 2019 Chevrolet Silverado trim level gets the best miles per gallon?

The best mileage isn’t so much about the trim level as it is the engine. The best fuel economy is with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 available in the LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country. Finally, the 5.3-liter V8 in the LTZ, and High Country delivers 17 mpg/24 mpg/20 mpg with RWD. Adding 4WD drops those numbers to 16 mpg/22 mpg/18 mpg. In the LT Trail Boss, the 5.3L mileage is 16 mpg/21 mpg/18 mpg.

  • Which 2019 Chevrolet Silverado trim is the safest?

In government crash testing, the Silverado received an overall rating of four out of the maximum of five stars.

Every Silverado has stability control, antilock brakes, hill-start assist, and a rearview camera. Standard on the High Country and optional on every trim beginning with the LT, is the Safety Package. It includes front-rear park assist, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, LTZ and High Country qualify for the Safety II Package with forward-collision warning, low-speed frontal braking, and high-beam assist.
