2022 Acura NSX: Choosing the Right Trim

Acura’s hybrid NSX supercar offers impressive performance both on and off the track, a formula that makes it easier to live with than a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S or McLaren 570S.

As 2022 marks the final year for the NSX, Acura marks the occasion with a special Type S limited edition. Along with unique styling and paint choices, the NSX Type S touts an additional 27 ponies for a total output of 600 horsepower. The Type S rides on a wider track and gets a recalibrated 9-speed transmission and stiffer adaptive dampers.

2022 Acura NSX Type S profile

The 2022 Acura NSX Type S starts at $169,500.

The 2022 Acura NSX Types comes well equipped right out of the box. Although it costs about $12,000 more than last year’s NSX, the Type S adds features that were optional in 2021, such as the lightweight carbon-fiber roof.

Visually, the NSX is quite eye-catching. It rides on staggered five-spoke black alloy wheels, 19-inch in the front and 20-inch in the rear, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R Ultra High-Performance tires. The Type S gets unique enhancements to improve airflow and aerodynamics, such as a carbon fiber front spoiler, carbon fiber decklid spoiler, and NSX GT3-inspired carbon fiber rear diffuser.

Other exterior features of note include auto-on/off Jewel Eye LED headlights, LED taillights, flush-fitted automatic door handles, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding heated side mirrors with reverse gear tilt-down.

On the performance front, Brembo 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brakes assure speedy stops, while improved adaptive magnetic dampers help keep all four tires planted firmly regardless of the road surface.

Acura’s Integrated Dynamic System offers four driving modes: Quiet, Sport, Sport +, and Track. Quiet mode allows the NSX to operate purely in EV mode for a longer distance. The other modes vary throttle inputs, gear change, and steering weight, allowing the NSX to be either a comfortable daily driver or hardcore track terror.

The NSX Type S gets a revised interior with a black Alcantara headliner and embossed Type S logo on the glove compartment. Standard amenities include cruise control, dual-zone automatic GPS-linked climate control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

The Type S comes standard with 4-way power driver and passenger heated sport seats, both tastefully wrapped in semi-aniline leather and Alcantara. Leather also covers the dash and door panels, instrument cluster hood, and steering wheel. Aluminum sport pedals, Active Sound Control, and ambient cabin lighting round out the Type S interior highlights.

The audio and infotainment system is one area where the NSX’s age starts to show. The NSX retains Honda’s older 7-inch touch-screen display unlike newer Acura products. Not only does it lack intuitive controls (like a physical volume knob), screen response can be somewhat lethargic. The system does include 3D navigation, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic, Acura Connected Services, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. It’s all hooked to a 9-speaker Acura ELS Studio Premium Audio system.

The NSX is again slightly behind the competition regarding driver safety. It comes with a complete set of airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag. Also standard is a multi-view rearview camera, automatic high-beam headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. However, if you’re looking for things like automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, or adaptive cruise control, this isn’t the car for you.

You’ll find a $13,000 Lightweight Package on the shortlist of options. It drops 58 pounds from the NSX’s weight by adding lightweight carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes and a carbon-fiber engine cover. Buyers can also opt for painted brake calipers in red, black, silver, or orange.  SiriusXM satellite radio is a $500 upgrade, while perforated semi-aniline leather sport seats will set you back another $1,000.

Metallic paint adds another $1,000 to the bottom line, while Gotham Gray Matte paint offered on only 70 cars costs a whopping $6,000.

With the $1,995 destination fee, the 2022 Acura NSX Type S costs $171,495. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $3,082. See 2022 Acura NSX Type S models for sale

2022 Acura NSX Type S includes:

  • Brembo brakes – provides impressive stopping power and can be upgraded with lightweight carbon-ceramic rotors.
  • Rain-sensing wipers – activate when sensing rain or mist on the windshield.
  • ELS Studio Premium Audio – with nine speakers and 580 watts, this big system can quickly fill the NSX’s small cockpit with loud, clear, crisp audio.
