The 2022 BMW X1 may be the company’s smallest crossover, but that in no way waters down the brand’s trademark performance pedigree. Small and boxy, the X1 carries an older design language that still looks good, but is not striking. The X1 offers a choice of front-wheel drive (X1 sDrive28i) or all-wheel drive (X1 xDrive28i).
Although it comes nicely equipped, many of the X1’s options come standard on its competitors and even some non-luxury compact SUVs costing thousands less. Still, for those who insist on having the BMW roundel on their key fob, the X1 offers an easy way to make it happen.
2022 BMW X1 sDrive28i (starting at $35,400), xDrive28i (starting at $37,400)
The 2022 BMW X1 sDrive28i starts at $35,400.
Regardless of being pulled by its front wheels or pushed by all four, the 2022 BMW X1 employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine good for 228 horsepower. Standard auto start/stop helps conserve fuel and limit emissions while idling.
Standard are 18-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires, non-metallic paint, power heated side mirrors, a power tailgate, rear privacy glass, and rain-sensing wipers that switch on the headlights when activated.
Being a performance SUV, the X1 includes brakes that dry themselves in wet weather, speed-sensitive power steering, torque vectoring (sends power to individual wheels for improved cornering), and selectable drive modes that include EcoPro, Comfort, and Sport.
The X1 includes synthetic leather seating BMW calls “SensaTec,” but the real deal is available. 8-way power front seats come standard and have memory for the driver’s seat and exterior mirrors.
A manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel and automatic climate control come at no extra cost, as does BMW’s Advanced Key that remembers the most recent settings for climate, audio, lighting preferences, mirrors, and driver’s seat position. One-touch up/down front power windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with shift paddles, and cruise control are all included.
Audio for the 2022 BMW X1 is provided by a 7-speaker 205-watt Hi-Fi sound system, while the infotainment system consists of an 8.8-inch touchscreen monitor including real-time traffic information, voice command with natural language recognition, and over-the-air updates.
Apple CarPlay comes standard, as does SiriusXM, but Android Auto is not available. BMW’s ConnectedDrive Services include apps to remind you of needed service, help you locate your vehicle, set the cabin temperature before entering the car, or route plan a trip.
On the safety front, the X1 includes all required airbag and stability control systems plus knee airbags, a rearview monitor, and a tire pressure monitor.
Driver-assists include forward collision warning with low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and speed limit info.
Bundled option groups include the Convenience Package that adds power-folding mirrors, proximity key keyless access-and-start, a panoramic moonroof, a universal garage door opener, power lumbar support, an auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, and ambient lighting.
The M Sport Package is highly advisable, if for nothing else the improved Sport seats that come with it. Also included are 18-inch M Double-Spoke wheels, M Sport styling accents, an 8-speed Sport automatic transmission, a Sport steering wheel, and M Sport suspension.
The Luxury Package brings a choice of wood or aluminum trim with pearl accents and leather upholstery. In contrast, the Premium Package adds the contents of the Convenience Package plus a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, LED headlights with cornering lights, navigation, and a head-up display.
Standalone options include a sliding and reclining rear seat, 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, Harman Kardon premium audio, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats. Buyers can opt for a wireless charging pad, performance tires, and BMW Parking Assistant that assists with parallel or perpendicular parking.
With the $995 destination fee, the 2022 BMW X1 sDrive28i costs $36,395. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $654. See 2022 BMW X1 models for sale
