In this age of SUV dominance, it’s reassuring to see the stylish and entertaining 2022 BMW Z4 convertible still has a place in BMW showrooms.
The Z4 competes in the same arena as the Porsche 718 Boxster and Jaguar F-Type.
The Z4 is refined, fast, and comfortable for a convertible, the perfect companion for a fun weekend getaway car.
Old school driving enthusiasts will bemoan the lack of a manual transmission, and the standard safety equipment is skimpy, but otherwise, the Z4 is sure to put a smile on your face.
2022 BMW Z4 sDrive30i (starting at $47,405)
The sDrive30i uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine with 255 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends the power back to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is not available.
The Z4 rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in summer performance tires. We prefer these tires over run-flat tires, which usually create a rougher ride quality. However, 19-inch wheels with run-flats are an option.
Standard equipment includes a 10.3-inch touchscreen, power-adjustable seats, adaptive cruise control, 10-speaker audio system, a wind blocker (reduces interior wind buffeting with the top down), faux leather seat trim, LED headlights, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Expensive packages and options abound for the Z4. With the sDrive 30i, it is probably worth opting for the $700 driver-assistance package, which adds extra safety features – park-distance control, blind-spot detection, and lane-departure warning – to the sole standard driver-assistance feature; forward-collision alert.
There is also the premium package for $2,900, which adds remote start, keyless entry, lumbar support, heated front seats, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, parking assist, and a head-up display.
We lean towards the sDrive30i as the Z4 trim to choose. The extra mojo under the hood of the considerably more expensive sDrive M40i is tempting, but the power of the 30i is all you need most of the time.

If you really want to zoom, the Z4 M40i the answer. Under the hood, a silky smooth and powerful, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, turbocharged engine – paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission – produces 382 horsepower.
The M40i adds the 30i’s standard equipment list with keyless entry, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, lumbar support, and an aerodynamic kit.
The M40i also comes as standard with the dynamic handling package – a $2,450 option on the 30i. This package includes M sport brakes with red or blue calipers, M Sport differential, and adaptive M Sport suspension.
