2022 Buick Envision: Choosing the Right Trim

This 2-row, 5-passenger SUV offers pricing and features that favor the luxury side of the equation

The 2022 Buick Envision is a 2-row, 5-passenger premium SUV that straddles the fence between mainstream crossovers like the Honda CR-V and luxury names like the Acura RDX.

Both its price and features favor the luxury side of the equation, a fact GM hopes will help lure buyers of foreign luxury brands into the Buick fold.

The 2022 Envision comes in three trims: Preferred, Essence, and Avenir. The first two allow some variation of features through the Envision’s generous option packages. The Avenir, on the other hand, takes a page from other luxury brands offering a well-equipped SUV with unique styling cues both inside and out.

The Envision comes in front- or all-wheel drive, but regardless of which version you choose, power comes from the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

2022 Buick Envision Preferred (Starting at $31,800)

The entry-level Envision is the Preferred trim. It comes nicely equipped but is missing some of the features one might expect at this price. The cloth seats come in black or beige. To get leather, you’ll have to move up to the next trim.

Standard features include single-zone manual air conditioning, front power windows with one-touch up/down feature, cruise control, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, an electric parking brake, and active noise cancelation.

An 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way power lumbar is standard, but the passenger seat is manual. The rear seats feature a 40/60 split-bench design with a folding center armrest and two rear cup holders. Those seated in the second row enjoy air vents and two USB charging ports. A 12-volt outlet is located in the front console with a second in the rear cargo area.

The driver sees a 4.2-inch color driver information screen from behind the wheel, with an 8-inch touchscreen for controlling the infotainment system to the right. The setup includes streaming Bluetooth plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Envision’s 6-speaker infotainment system can accommodate SiriusXM and a Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required). A rear backup camera helps the driver see behind the vehicle when reversing.

The Envision’s remote key fob allows keyless entry simply by touching the door handle. Once inside, a push-button starter brings the engine to life. The Envision is equipped with an idle start/stop feature that can be switched off.

Outside, the Envision Preferred rides on handsome 18-inch aluminum wheels with a 17-inch full-size spare as a backup. Automatic LED headlamps include a delay feature that allows the light to remain on as you find your way to the front door. Power side mirrors have heating elements to keep ice away, and the driver’s side includes an auto-dimming feature. Around back, the manual liftgate includes a wiper washer flanked by LED taillights.

On the safety and driver-assist front, the Envision Preferred comes standard with the Buick Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence Plus packages. Combined, they include low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning. Also onboard is a blind-spot monitor with lane-change warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.

Seven airbags offer front, front side-impact, front and rear head-curtain, and driver’s knee protection. GM’s Teen Driver programmable key fob allows parents to limit certain features like top speed and audio volume. It can also deliver an in-vehicle report card on a teen’s driving habits.

The Envision’s optional equipment is mainly bundled into packages. The Comfort and Convenience Package includes hands-free power liftgate, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, in-vehicle air ionizer, 10.2-inch infotainment screen upgrade, and 7-speaker audio with amplifier.

The Sport Touring Package jazzes things up with 20-inch dark finish alloy wheels, dark finish exterior trim, and dark grille surround with chrome mesh inserts. Also included are black roof rails and dark gloss finish on the wheel arch moldings, mirror caps, and exhaust bezels.

A panoramic power moonroof is also available.

With the $1,195 destination charge, the 2022 Buick Envision Preferred costs $32,995. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing, the monthly payment comes to $593. Find a 2022 Buick Envision Preferred for sale

2022 Buick Envision Preferred includes:

  • Keyless entry and start – With the key fob on your person, you can enter the Envision simply by pulling on the door handle and start it with a touch of a button.
  • A full complement of driver-assist features – Where many competitors make some systems optional, the Envision does not, giving a full suite of impressive driver’s aids.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – There’s no need to plug in your phone if it doesn’t need charging. The Envision’s infotainment can wirelessly connect to your smartphone.
  • Auto-dimming driver’s side mirror – Senses light from approaching rear traffic and automatically dims the mirror.

2022 Buick Envision Essence ($36,000)

The aptly named Essence elevates the Envision to a level we think its price and image demand. The additional $4,200 premium over the Preferred is noticeable, but consider all you get.

Standard equipment starts with the Preferred trim’s Comfort and Convenience Package, then adds perforated leather upholstery, 8-inch color driver information screen, 8-way power passenger seat with power lumbar support, and driver’s seat memory.

Optional on the Essence is the Technology Package I that brings front and rear parking sensors, HD Surround Vision camera, navigation, head-up display, and 9-speaker Bose audio system.

The Technology Package II (requires Sport Touring package) adds enhanced automatic emergency braking, enhanced parking assist, adaptive cruise control, rear camera mirror and washer, and adaptive dampers.

With destination, the 2022 Buick Envision Essence comes to $37,195. That brings the payment up by just $75, or $668 each month. Find a 2022 Buick Envision Essence for sale

  • Heated steering wheel – This excellent addition to the heated seats provides the same type of instant warmth, handy on freezing mornings when you’ve forgotten your gloves.

2022 Buick Envision Avenir ($40,400)

As the Envision’s top-line trim, the Avenir wants for little. It includes all the Essence features, including the contents from the Technology Package I. Unique to the Avenir are diamond-pattern quilted leather seats, unique-patterned interior trim, and 110-volt outlet on the rear console.

The front seats are both heated and ventilated, with a massage feature for the driver’s seat. The outboard rear seating positions are heated, and a wireless charging pad helps keep the wireless Apple CarPlay, well, wireless.

The Avenir rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels with Pearl Nickel finish and includes front and rear parking sensors.

With the $1,195 destination fee included, the 2022 Buick Envision Avenir costs $41,595. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing, the monthly payment comes to $747, or roughly $80 more than the Essence trim. Find a 2022 Buick Envision Avenir for sale
