The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is a large SUV with three rows of seating, three engine choices, available 4-wheel drive (4WD), and a simply vast amount of cargo space. Completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, the 12th-generation Suburban rolls into 2022 with few major changes.
One notable expectation is the wider availability of the range-topping 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, which buyers can now add to the off-road-oriented Z71, sporty RST, and Premier trims, not to mention the range-topping High Country.
The 2022 Suburban is available in six trims, with the base engine being a stout 355-hp 5.3-liter V8. There is also the choice of a turbo-diesel inline-6 that serves up 277-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
When properly equipped, the Suburban’s maximum towing capacity rings in at 8,300 pounds, while maximum interior storage capacity comes in at a cavernous 144.7 cubic feet.
To put it bluntly, the 2022 Chevy Suburban can carry or tow just about anything that you’ll ever need to get from one place to another. There’s also seating for up to nine people when the Suburban is ordered with an optional front bench seat. Keep in mind, anyone in the middle seat has to straddle the lower half of the front center console.
The recent update significantly benefited legroom in the second or third row while also boosting overall cargo capacity. Credit the Suburban’s switch from a solid rear axle to an independent rear suspension, a change that also creates a smoother and more comfortable ride. An optional air suspension makes a good thing only better, though the Suburban is a large truck and requires a sizable amount of acreage on the road.
Let’s take a look at what each 2022 Suburban trim level has to offer SUV shoppers.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban LS (starting at $52,400)
The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban LS is the base model, though you wouldn’t know it from this truck’s ample lineup of standard features.
In terms of comfort and tech items, the Suburban is equipped with seating for eight in total (the optional bench seat that raises capacity to nine and is only offered on the LS trim), a 10.2-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi hot spot, six USB outlets, two 120-volt outlets, satellite radio, and remote start.
Want more? Then you’re in luck because the Suburban comes with more! This includes three-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, limited-slip differential, and power-adjustable front bucket seats.
Chevrolet recently added more active safety features to the Suburban. Standard-issue items include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, pedestrian detection, LED headlights, HD rearview camera, rear-seat reminder, and GM’s Teen Driver system.
For approximately $800 extra, the Driver Alert Package brings along an expanded range of safety features, such as front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning.
The LS and LT trims are the only Suburbans not offered with the 420-hp 6.2-liter V8. Instead, buyers have the choice of the standard 355-hp 5.3-liter V8 or optional 277-hp turbo-diesel, with each coupled to a 10-speed automatic and choice of rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or 4-wheel-drive (4WD) format. Adding 4WD boosts the price by $3,000 on all trims, minus the Z71, which includes it as standard.
Major option groupings include the Max Trailering Package, the Advanced Trailering Package, and the Performance Upgrade Package with an upgraded air filtration system and performance exhaust.
Individual add-on items include larger alloy wheels (20- or 22-inches in diameter), an engine block heater, and the split-folding front bench seat. Of course, the higher you go in the Suburban trim levels, the more cosseting and luxurious this large SUV becomes.
A Chevy SUV buyer keeping the 2022 Suburban at its base price (with the $1,695 destination fee included) and who opts to finance for 60 months at a 3% interest rate with zero money down at signing can expect a monthly payment of $972. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban LS models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban LS includes:
- Seating – Optional front bench seat boosts capacity to nine.
- Power – A 355-hp 5.3-liter V8 is standard; a 277-hp turbo-diesel is optional.
- Infotainment – Standard 10.2-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi hot spot, and six USB ports.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban LT (starting at $57,800)
The 2022 Suburban is a lot of truck, and it commands a premium price. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t represent a great value, even when you add more features and options. The Suburban LT drives this point home by offering a sizable amount of added standard features without busting a car shopper’s budget.
Starting at around $58,000, the LT trim comes with heated front seats, a wireless charging pad, leather seating surfaces, Bose audio system, a hands-free tailgate, and access to more options, too.
This includes dual second-row captain’s chairs, a dual-screen rear entertainment system, and power-folding second and third-row seats. That last feature is handy for anyone who plans to maximize the Suburban’s enormous cargo capacity routinely. Even with the rear-most seats occupied, the trunk measures in at more than 41 cubic feet.
Shoppers can add more safety features via the Driver Alert Package, or, if you’re feeling decadent, these safety items are also grouped into the Luxury Package. This comes with a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, surround-view camera, and more.
At the time of writing, vehicle production shortages limited the availability of certain features.
Like the LS, the LT cannot be ordered with the larger of the two V8 engines.
In RWD format and kept to its base price, a 2022 Suburban LT purchased with no down payment and financed for 60 months at 3% interest will cost about $1,069 per month. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban LT models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban LT includes:
- Rear entertainment – A dual-screen rear entertainment system is available.
- Warmer in winter – The LT comes standard with heated front seats, and buyers can order a heated steering wheel.
- Four-wheel drive – As with most Suburban trims, adding 4WD costs $3,000 extra.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban RST (starting at $61,000)
The Suburban RST is primarily a color and trim upgrade from the LT model. Standard features include 22-inch black-painted alloy wheels, perforated black leather seats with red stitching, a black front grille, and RST exterior badges.
The RST also happens to be the least expensive trim offered with all three engines, the 5.3-liter V8, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel, and 6.2-liter V8.
By and large, the rest of the stand-alone extras and option packages are the same as what you find on the Suburban LT.
With the base price as our guide, a 2022 Suburban RST buyer who finances for 60 months at a $3 interest rate with no money down at signing will end up paying $1,127. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban RST models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban RST includes:
- Exterior mods – The RST has its own unique front grille design and exterior badges.
- Bigger wheels – 22-inch alloy wheels are standard.
- Larger V8 – For the 2022 model year, the 6.2-liter V8 can be had in the RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country trims.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 (starting at $63,000)
The Suburban Z71 is the perfect choice for SUV owners planning on taking their trucks off-road. That’s because this trim not only comes standard with 4WD, it includes underbody skid plates, hill descent control, black side steps, 20-inch wheels wrapped by all-terrain tires, 2-speed transfer case, and red-painted tow hooks at the front and rear.
The Z71 is available with the Max Trailering Package and an adaptive air suspension for more go-anywhere capability. This latter feature makes the ride smoother on paved surfaces and more compliant when venturing onto more rugged terrain.
One item missing from the Z71 is the optional turbo-diesel. Options here are limited to the two V8 engines.
Starting at $63,000 plus destination, a 2022 Suburban Z71 would cost $1,162 per month with no zero down at signing and financed for 60 months with 3% interest. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 includes:
- All-terrain – The Z71 comes with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, and hill descent control.
- Riding on air – An adaptive air suspension is optional.
- Four-wheel drive – The Z71 is the only Suburban that comes standard with 4WD.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban Premier (starting at $65,800)
The Suburban Premier is the second-to-last stop for anyone who wants many features on their full-size, three-row SUV. With a starting price of more than $65,000, what sets the Premier apart from its lesser siblings?
The Premier adds blind-spot monitoring, lane change alert, plus front and rear parking sensors in terms of safety. A magnetically-controlled suspension, 10-speaker Bose stereo, and navigation are also standard.
Seating gets similarly upgraded, thanks to power-folding second and third-row seats, ventilated front seats, and dual second-row captain’s chairs.
A panoramic sunroof, rear camera mirror with integrated washer, and trailer brake controller are some of the items included in the Luxury Package, which costs about $4,500.
All three engines are available in RWD or 4WD format.
Financing a 2022 Suburban Premier for 60 months with a 3% interest rate with nothing down would equal a monthly payment of about $1,213. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban Premier models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban Premier includes:
- Safety – The Suburban Premier comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and lane change alert.
- Seating upgrade – Second-row captain’s chairs and ventilated front seats are added.
- Tech and sounds – The Premier includes navigation and Bose audio system.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban High Country (starting at $72,700)
The range-topping High Country trim was previously the only variant to offer the 420-hp 6.2-liter V8. While buyers can have that engine on other trims in 2022, the High Country still has a lot to differentiate itself from the rest of the Suburban lineup – not to mention justify a price roughly $30,000 more than a base model.
To start, the base V8 is jettisoned in favor of either the 6.2-liter V8 or optional turbo-diesel. If you want more reasonable fuel economy, the diesel returns an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway. The best the big V8 can do is 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.
Magnetic ride control is standard, as are 22-inch alloy wheels. This is the only trim offered with power-retractable side steps. The High Country also includes the rear camera mirror and surround-view monitor, which makes this SUV easier to maneuver in tight confines
Using its base price of $72,700 plus the $1,695 destination fee as a fiscal guide, a 2022 Suburban High Country financed for 60 months at 3% interest with nothing down would cost about $1,337 each month. See 2022 Chevrolet Suburban High Country models for sale
2022 Chevrolet Suburban High Country includes:
- Suspension upgrade – Magnetic ride control is standard; air suspension is optional.
- Cabin trim – The High Country cabin features more premium leather and trim.
- Visibility – A surround-view camera and rear camera mirror are standard.
