2022 Dodge Charger: Choosing the Right Trim

Not many family sedans can match the muscle and manners of the 2022 Dodge Charger. Uniquely American, this 4-door muscle car offers styling and performance unknown to cars like the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Toyota Camry.

The Charger’s over-the-top styling is only part of its cool factor, with a choice of two V8 engines giving it the power to run neck and neck with some of the world’s great performance cars. In R/T form, a HEMI V8 helps the Charger achieve 60 mph in just over five seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Those numbers come down even more in the supercharged SRT Hellcat trim, but even the base V6 can rocket the Charger to 60 mph in under seven seconds.

In fairness to the competition, the Charger is riding on an ancient platform. You won’t find semi-autonomous driving ability nor the latest in in-cabin electronics. Still, the Charger remains competitive, offering several advanced driver-assist features, an excellent Uconnect infotainment system, and, on V6 models, the option of all-wheel drive.

2022 Dodge Charger SXT (Starting at $31,350)

Powering the entry-level Dodge Charger SXT is a 3.6-liter V6 engine good for 292 horsepower (300 when equipped with all-wheel drive) and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Standard driver-safety and assists include electronic traction and stability control, full airbag coverage, anti-lock brakes, and hill start assist. A rear backup camera and rear parking sensors are also standard. The Charger offers more advanced driver assistance such as automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, and lane-keeping. However, in contrast to most competitors, these systems are optional, not standard.

A quick walk around the SXT’s exterior reveals the simplest version of the Charger image, devoid of racing stripes, fender flares, or a hood scoop.

The SXT features automatic bi-functional LED projector headlights, body-colored power side mirrors, 17-inch silver alloy wheels, and variable wipers.

Power windows with driver and passenger one-touch up/down come standard, as does cruise control, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone manual climate control, a driver information display, and a detailed gauge cluster including a tachometer, 140-mph speedometer, plus temperature and fuel gauges. Unexpected features at this price include remote start, power trunk release, an acoustic windshield, and illuminated driver and passenger-side vanity mirrors.

Cloth-covered sport seats in black come standard, as do 8-way power driver and passenger seats with 4-way power lumbar support. The rear seats have a 60/40 split for easy access to the large trunk. To help the driver get comfortable, the Charger includes a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch controls for the audio, cruise, and Bluetooth.

The SXT’s standard audio includes six speakers, dual USB charging ports, and an auxiliary input jack. A Uconnect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen provides connectivity features such as streaming Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The SXT gains a more powerful alternator, performance brakes, electronic stability control with sport mode, heated side mirrors, LED fog lights, 19-inch wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control when upgraded to all-wheel drive. Also included is the Dodge Performance Pages feature that allows you to keep track of performance data, an 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way power lumbar support, an 8.4-inch touch-screen, SiriusXM, and a performance steering wheel with paddle shifters.

Notable options for the SXT get bundled into packages. The Alpine Audio Group includes nine Alpine speakers, an amplifier, and a powered subwoofer. At the same time, the Cold Weather Group adds heated side mirrors, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Driver’s Convenience Group adds a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic detection, power mirrors, HID headlights, LED fog lights, and a garage door opener.  The Technology group completes the SXTs driver-assist systems by adding forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. The package also includes dual-zone automatic climate control.

There are several visual upgrades packages, including the Blacktop Package. Other options included in various packages are navigation, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 19- and 20-inch wheels, and a six-speaker Alpine audio upgrade. A power sunroof is a standalone option.

With the $1,595 destination fee, we expect the 2022 Dodge Charger SXT to cost $32,945. On a no-money-down loan for 60 months at 3% financing, the monthly payment should work out to $592. See 2022 Dodge Charger SXT models for sale

2022 Dodge Charger SXT includes:

  • Proximity key fob – Unlocking the doors and starting the car requires having the fob in a pocket or purse.
  • Remote start – allows remote starting while you remain warm and dry inside your house.
  • Rear parking sensors – alerts the driver with an audible tone when getting too close to a stationary object.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – allows a smartphone to be connected to the car’s infotainment system, giving access to your favorite apps.

2022 Dodge Charger GT ($33,625)

The GT uses the same 300-hp V6 as the SXT AWD. Like the SXT, the GT offers the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

With its additional exterior upgrades, including a hood scoop and larger wheels, we think the GT is the better buy versus the SXT because you get the visual appeal of the more expensive R/T without the added cost or lower fuel economy.

Beyond the performance hood and 20-inch wheels, the GT’s standard roster includes performance brakes, dual rear exhaust with bright tips, a performance suspension with Bilstein shocks, three-mode electronic stability control, projector LED fog lamps, and a body-colored rear spoiler.

The GT’s cabin features an 8-way power driver’s and passenger seat with 4-way power lumbar support, an Alpine six-speaker audio system, an 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment upgrade with SiriusXM satellite radio, and a CD/DVD/MP3 player.

Above the SXT’s options list, the GT offers the Performance Handling Group with black Brembo fixed caliper 4-piston brakes, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a high-performance suspension, and 20-inch Black Noise wheels with all-season performance 245/45ZR20 tires. This package is not available with all-wheel drive.

The Plus Group adds a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, memory for the driver’s seat, mirrors and power steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, HID headlights, and LED interior lighting. The package also includes Nappa and Alcantara seating and 20×8-inch Satin Carbon wheels (rear-drive GT only).

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Dodge Charger GT will carry a starting price of $35,220. On a 60-month loan at 3% and with no money down, you’re looking at a monthly payment of $633. See 2022 Dodge Charger GT models for sale

2022 Dodge Charger GT includes:

  • Performance hood – with a big, functional hood scoop, this hood makes the humble GT look as aggressive as the R/T and Scat Pack models.
  • Performance brakes – feature vented front and rear discs for improved stopping power.
  • Alpine speakers – while not the premium nine-speaker version, this simple Alpine upgrade vastly improves the stock sound system.
  • Available Performance Handling Group – offers better overall performance, a must for those who love the thrill of pushing their car to the limit.

2022 Dodge Charger R/T ($39,745)

The R/T is the first of the Charger lineup to get as standard a 5.7-liter HEMI V8. With 370 hp on tap, this engine gives the Charger the power to reach 60 mph in just over five seconds. The R/T is only available as a rear-drive car, as are all the trims that come after it.

Beyond the big V8, the R/T builds off the GT’s standard equipment list by offering a thicker rear axle (220 mm vs. 195 mm), an active performance exhaust, 20-inch Satin Carbon wheels, and a 160-mph speedometer.

In the R/T wheelhouse of available equipment are the aforementioned Driver Convenience Group, Performance Handling Group, Technology Group, and Cold Weather Group.

A Daytona Edition Group adds leather and Alcantara sport seats, Mopar cold air intake, a memory system for seats, steering wheel, and mirrors, plus a blind-spot monitor. Also included is a gloss black instrument panel cluster, a padded dash, a security alarm, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, LED interior lighting, a black one-piece rear spoiler, and Daytona decals.

The Harman Kardon Audio Group adds 19 Harman Kardon Greenedge speakers that use less power than conventional speakers, thus requiring a less powerful amp to achieve amazing sound.

With destination, the 2022 Dodge Charger R/T comes in at $41,340. If putting no money down, the monthly payment on a 60-month loan at 3% comes to $743. See 2022 Dodge Charger R/T models for sale

2022 Dodge Charger R/T includes:

  • 5.7-liter HEMI V8 – this engine has the sound and power worthy of the legendary Charger name, and it’s surprisingly easy on fuel, at least when cruising at highway speeds.
  • Available navigation – uses satellites, not cell towers, so you’ll always have access to maps, even in remote locations.
  • Available Harmon Kardon audio – With 19 speakers and a powered subwoofer, this system is a music lover’s best friend.
  • Available adaptive cruise control – keeps a safe distance between the Charger and traffic ahead when using cruise control.

2022 Dodge Charger Scat Pack ($44,070)

The Scat Pack builds off the R/T with an even more powerful 485-hp 392-cubic-inch V8 under the hood. A beefed-up 8-speed automatic is included, as are several electronic systems aimed at improving track performance.

The Scat Pack gets fitted with a larger rear axle, beefed-up suspension and steering, Brembo performance brakes, a limited-slip differential, 3.09 rear axle ratio, and the Severe Duty II upgraded engine cooling system.

The Scat Pack includes Launch Control (improves acceleration from a standing stop by limiting tire spin), Launch Assist (uses wheel sensors to minimize wheel hop that could damage the driveline), and Line Lock (activates the front brakes but leaves the rear brakes off, facilitating easier burnouts).

The Performance Pages are upgraded to SRT levels, while the speedometer goes to 180 mph. SRT configurable drive modes include Sport, Track, and Custom settings, allowing the driver to control the transmission shift times, steering feel, adaptive damping, paddle shifters, and traction control.

Amenities for the Scat Pack include driver’s seat memory, heated cloth performance front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a deluxe security alarm.

Scat Pack options include the Daytona Edition Group, Driver Convenience Group, Technology Group, and the Plus Group. Navigation and the 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system are also available.

Unique to the Scat Pack is the Widebody Package that brings wider wheels, fender flares, Widebody competition suspension, adaptive damping, Brembo six-piston brakes, a performance shift indicator, and 20-inch wheels with 305/35ZR20 performance tires.

The Dynamics Package adds a leather flat-bottom steering wheel, Brembo brakes, and 20-inch wheels with 275/40ZR20 all-season tires.

The Carbon Fiber and Suede package adds authentic carbon fiber interior accents and a Dinamica suede headliner.

With destination, the 2022 Dodge Charger Scat Pack sells for $45,665. On a 60-month loan at 3% and no money down, the monthly payment should be $821. See 2022 Dodge Charger Scat Pack models for sale

2022 Dodge Charger Scat Pack includes:

  • 392 V8 – delivers a best-in-class 485 hp, making it one of the most powerful sedans in the segment.
  • Launch Control – helps the Charger avoid wheel spin upon launch, allowing for faster and better-controlled off-the-line performance.
  • Heated steering wheel – keeps hands warm when the temperature outside gets hostile.
  • Available Widebody Package – makes the Charger look even meaner, adding bona fide performance cred.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat ($74,450)

The Charger SRT Hellcat and its more powerful twin, the SRT Hellcat Redeye ($82,000, est.), embody the pinnacle of Dodge performance technology. These “family sedans” are like four-door sports cars, offering more power than some exotic supercars costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Under the hood, the SRT Hellcat packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 dishing up 717 hp. The Hellcat Redeye uses the same engine but with different tuning to produce an astounding 797 hp, making the Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world.

The Widebody package comes standard on the Hellcats, as do the six-piston Brembo brakes from the Scat Pack’s Dynamics Package. The Hellcat gets fitted with a 2.62 rear axle ratio and the Race Cooldown cooling system. The Redeye goes a step further with a Super Chiller system that uses A/C refrigerant to cool the supercharger after shutdown and the open airbox from the Daytona Package.

The Hellcat gets three-mode adaptive Bilstein shocks with setting for Sport, Track, and Auto. In Auto mode, the shocks automatically adjust to road conditions, while the Sport setting firms up the ride for better high-speed maneuvers. Track mode shifts as much weight as possible over the rear wheels, helping improve traction.

Torque Reserve helps reduce supercharger lag, while HID headlights help light up the night. Blind-spot monitoring is standard, but other driver-assists found in the Technology Package are not available to the SRT Hellcat.

The SRT’s price includes a power driver and passenger seat, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, ventilated Laguna leather front seats, and heated rear seats. The Alcantara Package upgrades the seats to Laguna leather with suede inserts and an Alcantara-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel.

Notable options include navigation, the Harman Kardon 19-speaker audio upgrade, and Satin Black painted hood, roof, deck lid, and spoiler.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat sells for around $76,045. The SRT Hellcat Redeye is $84,740.

On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and no money down, the monthly payment for the SRT Hellcat comes to $1,366 while the SRT Hellcat Redeye is $1,523. See 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat models for sale

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat includes:

  • Supercharged 6.2-liter V8 – with 717 hp, there aren’t many sedans that can overtake this beast.
  • Race Cooldown – advanced engine cooling system uses the intercooler pump and radiator fan to help cool the supercharger after the engine shuts down.
  • Adaptive damping – the Bilstein shocks offer three settings: Auto, Sport, and Track.
  • 200-mph speedometer – it’s no joke, and in the Redeye version, it goes up to 220 mph (although the fastest recorded top speed for the Redeye is 203 mph).

FAQ

  • What is the best 2022 Dodge Charger trim?

At minimum, a Dodge Charger deserves a V8. After all, it’s a muscle car. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) R/T model offers a lot of bang for the buck, and the 20-inch wheels look just right.

  • How many mpg does the 2022 Dodge Charger get?

A base 2022 Dodge Charger, a V6 model with an 8-speed automatic, is rated by the EPA at 19 mpg city/30 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, that drops a bit, to 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway/21 mpg combined. With the 5.7-liter V8, the Charger returns 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, whereas the 6.4-liter model gets 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway/18 mpg combined. At the Hellcat level with the supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the 2022 Charger comes in at only 12 mpg city/21 mpg highway/15 mpg combined.

  • Which 2022 Dodge Charger trim level offers the most safety?

If you buy a 2022 Dodge Charger GT, order it with Plus Group. That way you’ll get a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, two safety technologies we highly recommend.
