2022 GMC Terrain: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 GMC Terrain is the company’s smallest SUV offering, but it certainly doesn’t feel like an entry-level model

The 2022 GMC Terrain is the company’s smallest SUV offering, but it certainly doesn’t feel like an entry-level model.

For 2022, the Terrain gets a revised trim line, dropping the base SL and adding a new AT4 intended for light-off road use. The Terrain is more than competitive in its price range, offering numerous features, including a lengthy list of standard driver-assist systems.

Climbing the trim ladder brings more options and a higher price, but all 2022 GMC Terrain models come standard with the same 170-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with auto start/stop and 9-speed automatic. The SLE and SLT trim come standard with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional on the SLE and SLT and standard on the AT4 and Denali.

2022 GMC Terrain SLE (Starting at $27,900)

Right out of the gate, the entry-level 2022 GMC Terrain SLE impresses with its robust standard content.

GMC’s Pro Safety suite of active driver assists includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, following distance indicator, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The Terrain also includes a Rear Seat Reminder that reminds the driver to check the rear seat before leaving the vehicle. Teen Driver allows parents to monitor their kids’ driving habits and set specific limits on speed and radio volume. OnStar-connected services are also available.

Outside, the Terrain SLE sports 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels with a 16-inch full-size spare as a backup. LED headlights with C-shaped lighting rings, LED taillights, heated outside mirrors, and body-colored mirror caps and door handles are also standard fare. GM’s capless fuel filler system eliminates the need for a gas cap, side privacy glass helps keep the interior cool, and an acoustic laminated windshield keeps noise levels low.

Moving to the interior, we find single-zone manual air conditioning, one-touch up/down driver’s window, 6-way manual driver and passenger seat, cruise control, keyless open, and push-button start.

Unexpected at this price point are cargo area second-row release levers, active noise cancellation noise reduction technology, fold-flat passenger seat, and 4.2-inch multi-color driver information display. Rear-seat passengers get air vents, two USB charge ports, and 60/40 split-folding rear seat, while the cargo bay provides a second 12-volt outlet.

Handling the SLE’s infotainment duties is a 7-inch touchscreen monitor with streaming Bluetooth, HD radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus SiriusXM (subscription required). Two USB data ports are located in the front console, and the system can host a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system’s 7-inch touchscreen also serves as the display for the rear-vision camera.

Options for the SLE include the Driver Convenience Package, which consists of an 8-way power driver seat with 4-way power lumbar support, heated front seats, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and roof-mounted luggage rack side rails.

A power sunroof with a power sunshade and hands-free power liftgate are standalone options that require the Driver Convenience Package.

The Infotainment Package I brings a larger 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, enhanced driver information screen, 110-volt outlet, SD card reader, and HD rear vision camera.

The GMC Pro Safety Plus Package adds a blind-spot monitor, lane change alert, rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert. Also included are adaptive cruise control, the Safety Alert driver’s seat, and integrated LED side mirror turn signals.

A rear-seat DVD entertainment system can be ordered, along with some limited production packages, such as the Hit the Road Package that includes molded assist steps and roof rack cross rails. The Elevation Edition adds 19-inch gloss-black wheels, darkened front grille, black roof side rails, and black exterior accents.

With the $1,195 destination charge, the 2022 GMC Terrain SLE costs $29,095. On a 60-month loan with no money down and 3% finance, the monthly payment comes to $523.

All-wheel drive adds another $1,600 to the Terrain’s bottom line. Find a 2022 GMC Terrain SLE for sale

2022 GMC Terrain SLE includes:

  • Automatic emergency braking – when detecting a possible collision, this system can slow and even stop the vehicle before an accident can occur.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay – no need to plug into a USB port. Now you can wirelessly connect your iPhone to Terrain’s infotainment system and enjoy music, apps, message, and maps. Android Auto is also wireless.
  • Keyless entry and start – with the key fob on your person, you can enter the Terrain by touching the door handle and start it with a touch of a button.
  • Rear-seat vents – it might seem a minor thing, but many of the Terrain’s competitors only offer them on top-line trims.

2022 GMC Terrain SLT ($31,900)

A step up from the SLE is the SLT trim. Given its price-to-feature ratio, we think the SLT is the Terrain lineup’s best value. It includes all of the SLE’s features plus the contents of the Driver Convenience Package and Infotainment Package I, minus the navigation upgrade.

The SLT brings interior accent lighting, driver’s seat memory, a 6-way power passenger seat with 2-way power lumbar support, perforated leather seating, fog lamps, and a 4-spoke heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Also standard is a universal garage door opener, hands-free power rear liftgate, roof-mounted luggage rack rails, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Options for the SLT include the GMC Pro Safety Plus Package and Elevation Edition (see SLE optional equipment list) and the Infotainment Package II that brings navigation and a 7-speaker Premium Bose audio system.

The Tech Package requires the Pro Safety Plus Package and adds a head-up display, 360-degree Surround Vision camera, plus front and rear parking sensors.

19-inch wheels are available.

With destination, the 2022 GMC Terrain SLT lists for $33,095. Using the same loan calculation as with the SLE, the payment increases a mere $72 or $595 a month. Find a 2022 GMC Terrain SLT for sale

2022 GMC Terrain SLT includes:

  • Heated front seats – keep the driver and passenger warm, perfect for when fellow passengers don’t like an overly hot cabin temperature.
  • Power front seats – 8-way power for the driver and 6-way for the passenger. Both include power lumbar support.
  • Heated steering wheel – allows a comfortable grip on a cold winter day without the need for gloves.
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control – allows for separate temperature settings for the front passenger and driver.

2022 GMC Terrain AT4 ($34,000)

The AT4 is the newest trim in the Terrain lineup. It purports a more rugged, off-road image and includes upgrades to help it venture far off the beaten path.

The AT4 includes the same basic equipment and option packages as the SLT but adds unique interior and exterior styling cues, such as the AT4 stitched logo on the front seats. The AT4 rides on taller Goodyear Sport Terrain tires surrounding 17-inch gloss-black wheels. The AT4’s grille and badging are also unique to the trim.

The AT4 includes a protective engine skid plate and a Traction Select system with Off-Road mode for off-roading. All-wheel drive is standard.

With destination, the AT4 carries an MSRP of $35,195. That brings the monthly payment to $632 when using the same 60-month loan at a 3% calculation. That’s just $40 more each month than the SLE, a relative bargain for those seeking off-road ability. Find a 2022 GMC Terrain AT4 for sale

  • Available head-up display – projects vital driver information onto a small pop-up screen just above the instrument cluster, allowing the driver to keep their eyes on the road.
  • Gloss-black wheels – look great and provide a strong yet lightweight wheel for rugged adventures.

2022 GMC Terrain Denali ($36,600)

The top-line Terrain Denali adds additional luxury beyond the SLT while maintaining the ability to do light off-roading with standard all-wheel drive.

As for equipment, the Terrain Denali includes as standard almost all of the features found in the SLT’s option packages, then adds more bright chrome trim, 19-inch styled wheels, and Premium suspension.

The Denali has just one major package upgrade of its own. The Denali Premium package brings ventilated front seats, automatic parking assist, adaptive cruise control camera, HD Surround Vision camera, and heated rear seats.

Including the destination fee, the 2022 GMC Terrain Denali costs $37,795. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing, the monthly payment comes to $679. Find a 2022 GMC Terrain Denali for sale
