2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: Choosing the Right Trim

Still as capable as the standard Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe adds a bit more green to Jeep’s venerable off-road machine. While the 21-mile electric-only range is great for short around-town trips,  the hybrid system’s most notable attribute is the 4xe’s impressive 470 lb-ft of torque and 375-horsepower combined output. The 2.0-liter turbo engine and electric motor deliver a 6-second 0-to-60 mph time and an overall range of about 370 miles.

The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe doesn’t come cheap, with the entry-level Sahara trim starting at just over $50,000. However, being PHEVs, the 4xe models qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit and any state or local hybrid tax credits.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe (starting at $52,530)

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe begins at $52,530. As a plug-in hybrid, it is eligible for tax breaks.

The Sahara trim comes nicely equipped out the door, but Jeep sees fit to add even more standard equipment in the plug-in version.

Along with the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and electric motor, the Sahara 4xe includes an 8-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s Selec-Trac full-time 4-wheel-drive system. Also standard are Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles with conventional differentials.

To keep your Sahara 4xe safe when off-roading, Jeep provides skid-plate protection for the fuel tank, transfer case, and transmission. It also provides two front tow hooks, one rear tow hook, and a custom Jeep tool kit.

The Sahara 4xe touts 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-season tires, with a full-size spare mounted to the rear swing-out door. Jeep’s Sunrider fabric top comes standard but is replaceable with several hardtop options. Power heated side mirrors, full steel doors with power windows, automatic LED headlights, LED fog lights, and a power-locking fuel-filler door are part of the Sahara 4xe package.

Opening the Sahara 4xe’s front door reveals manually adjustable leather low-back bucket seats, with the driver getting 2-way manual lumbar support. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat can accommodate passengers or cargo or some combination of the two. A full-length center console, full carpeting, and illuminated cup holders are all standard.

Other interior conveniences include a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise control, audio, and Bluetooth buttons. The cabin remains comfortable courtesy of the automatic climate control and is quieter thanks to the Active Noise Control sound-canceling system.

The Sahara 4xe includes remote keyless entry with push-button start, a 115-volt outlet, two 12-volt outlets, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient LED interior lighting, and a 7-inch color information display located between the speedometer and tachometer.

Jeep’s Uconnect 4C infotainment system includes an 8.4-inch touch screen, GPS navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a 6-month trial subscription. Also in the bundle is a 1-year trial subscription to SiriusXM Guardian and 5-years of SiriusXM Travel Link and Traffic. There are two USB charge ports in the media hub and two more in the console.

The Sahara 4xe includes a 522-watt Alpine audio system complete with nine speakers, including a subwoofer, to ensure you can hear your music loud and clear.

In a nod to safety, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe includes front and front side-impact airbags, electronic roll mitigation, electronic traction and stability control, trailer sway damping, and Jeep’s Selec-Speed control, which acts like a low-speed cruise control when off-roading.  A tire-pressure monitor, rear backup camera, and hill-start assist round out the Sahara 4xe’s central safety systems.

Options for the Sahara 4xe are substantial, starting with no less than 10 different roof options. Buyers can opt for a premium Sunrider top in black or tan, a 3-piece Freedom hardtop in black or body color, or the Sky One-Touch power top with a power-retracting soft top built into the hardtop shell.

A doors-off mirror kit allows the side mirrors to be bolted to the vehicle when removing the doors, and a set of half doors offer standard or premium uppers with zip-open plastic windows.

An available integrated front-grille camera helps the driver see what’s directly in the Sahara 4xe’s path, while an available Corning Gorilla Glass windshield helps avoid rock chips and cracked glass. Remote start and a proximity key remote key fob make getting in and out a bit easier, while an available limited-slip rear differential helps improve traction.

Buyers can opt for the Safety Group that includes a blind-spot monitor and rear-cross traffic alert. The Advanced Safety Group adds adaptive cruise control with stop, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The Cold Weather Group adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start. The Trailer Tow and Heavy-Duty Electric Group add a 700-amp battery, 7- and 4-pin harness, auxiliary switches, and Class II trailer hitch.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe costs $54,125. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $973. See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe models for sale

  • Selec-Trac – This full-time 4-wheel-drive system is active even when driving at highway speeds, giving you the security of four-wheel traction both on and off-road.
  • Heated side mirrors – These help avoid ice and snow from building up on the mirrors.
  • Alpine audio system – With its 522-watt amp, this system has the power to overcome the Wrangler’s sometimes noisy cabin.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe (starting at $58,105)

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe starts at $58,105.

The High Altitude is the most luxurious of the 4xe group, having a good portion of the Sahara’s optional equipment, along with a few unique upgrades. However, unlike the Sahara, the High Altitude’s paint colors are limited to black, silver, gray, and white.

Building off the Sahara 4xe, the High Altitude adds 20-inch full-painted aluminum wheels and matching body-colored paint for the 3-piece hardtop, fender flares, door handles, grille, and bumpers. Along with the standard hardtop comes a rear window defroster and rear wiper/washer combo.

The High Altitude includes the contents of the Safety Group (blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert), plus rear parking sensors and a proximity keyless entry key fob.

Other than the half-doors, which are not available on the High Altitude, the Sahara’s remaining options and option groups are also available for the High Altitude.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe costs $59,700. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $1,073. See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe models for sale

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe includes:

  • Blind-spot monitor – Alerts the driver to vehicles in or approaching the Wrangler’s blind spot.
  • Body-colored hardtop –Keeps out noise and wind but has removable top panels for when you want your Jeep to feel like a Jeep.
  • Proximity key fob – Only requires having the fob in your purse or pocket to unlock the doors and start the vehicle.
  • Rear parking sensors – Alerts the driver when getting too close to a stationary object.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe (starting at $56,230)

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe front left in silver

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe starts at $56,230.

The toughest of the Wrangler Unlimited line is the Rubicon, or in this case, the Rubicon 4xe PHEV.

Compared to the standard Rubicon, the hybrid offers a few more standard upgrades, although the hardware that makes a Rubicon a Rubicon is all there.

Above the offerings found on the Sahara and High Altitude, the Rubicon 4xe upgrades its Dana 44 axles with Tru-Lok locking front and rear differentials and a 4.10 rear axle ratio. Jeep’s 4:1 Rock-Trac full-time 4-wheel drive replaces the Selec-Trac system. Rock-Trac is better suited to off-roading and can still operate at highway speeds.  The Rubicon 4xe rides on 17-inch machined and black-painted wheels wrapped in off-road tires. The Rubicon 4xe includes an electronic disconnecting sway bar for improved wheel articulation.

Standard conveniences closely mirror the Sahara 4xe and include the 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C infotainment system, automatic LED headlights, LED fog lights, ambient LED interior lighting, and automatic climate control. Also standard are power windows, power door locks, and remote keyless entry. The Rubicon 4xe ditches the Sahara’s leather seats for cloth, although you can upgrade to leather.

Sadly, the new Xtreme Recon 35-inch Tire Package offered on the gas-only Rubicon is unavailable for the PHEV.

The remaining options for the Rubicon are the same as the Sahara’s, including the Safety Group, Advanced Safety Group, Cold Weather Group, and Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group.

Unique to the Rubicon 4xe is the Steel Bumper Group that adds steel front and rear bumpers.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe sells for $57,825. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $1,039. See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe models for sale

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe includes:

  • Tru-Lok – With the push of a button, the driver can lock the front and rear axles, making slow-motion off-roading a bit less treacherous.
  • 73.1:1 crawl ratio – Part of the Rock-Trac system, this snail’s pace crawl mode lets the Rubicon inch down steep terrain without the need for braking.
  • Electronic disconnecting front sway bar – Electronically disconnects the sway bar ends from the wheels, allowing greater front wheel articulation when tackling uneven terrain.
  • Uconnect 4C – Jeep’s user-friendly infotainment system includes a large 8.4-inch touch screen, GPS navigation, and the ability to control Apple or Android apps via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
