The 2022 Mazda CX-9 returns with a new Touring Plus grade and standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on all trim levels.
Slotting between Touring and Carbon Edition, the new Touring Plus trim brings with it a few Touring upgrades. A power-sliding moonroof, bigger alloy wheels, and ventilated front seats are included in Touring Plus.
Among the 3-row CX-9’s primary competitors are the Kia Telluride, Chevrolet Traverse, and Toyota Highlander.
We like the CX-9 for its solid fuel economy, well-tailored interior, spunky turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and athletic handling. We also appreciate the standard AWD.
You may pick from among six trim levels: Sport, Touring, Touring Plus, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature.
Seven-passenger seating is standard on most grades. However, you can add second-row captain’s chairs for no extra charge on the Touring with the Premium Package and Touring Plus, making for a 6-passenger configuration. Captain’s chairs are standard on Carbon Edition and Signature trims.
A 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine motivates all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Based on government estimates, the CX-9’s fuel economy is 20 miles per gallon in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg in combined driving.
2022 Mazda CX-9 Sport (starting at $35,280)
The 2022 Mazda CX-9 Sport starts at $35,280.
Included are 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lights (auto on-off headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights), and rain-sensing wipers.
Also standard are heated power outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, tri-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats.
Keyless entry with push-button start, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and cloth seating are also included.
The infotainment system has a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, and voice recognition. SMS texting, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are also standard.
The driver aids are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Also included are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist.
Mazda doesn’t offer any factory-installed options on any grade except Touring.

- Rain-sensing wipers – When the system senses moisture on the windshield, it automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of rain.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through your vehicle’s media system.

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 Touring starts at $37,430.
Touring adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a HomeLink garage remote, a rear power liftgate, leather-trimmed seats, and four USB ports. A 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is also included.
For $2,080, you may add the Touring Premium Package. It includes a 12-speaker Bose audio system, LED fog lights, a power sliding glass moonroof, and front/rear parking assist. Also included are satellite radio capability, two third-row USB ports, and wireless phone charging.

- Traffic and Travel Link – This is a 3-year subscription to the satellite-radio service offering traffic, weather, sports scores, nearby parking, and more.
