The 2022 Mazda3 sedan and hatchback have a premium look and feel a step above most competitors. The Mazda3 offers various configurations, including all-wheel drive, an available manual transmission, and three engine options. The Mazda3 displays the latest in technology and convenience, with an interior so nicely detailed it could easily be mistaken for an Audi or BMW.

The entry-level Mazda3 2.0 employs the least powerful engine offered in the lineup and is only available as a front-drive sedan with an automatic transmission. With 155 horsepower, the Mazda3 2.0 isn’t slow, but it doesn’t have the same sporty feel as the trim’s equipped with the more powerful 2.5-liter engine. Then again, the base Mazda3’s price is hard to argue with, especially when you consider all you get for your money.
The Mazda3 2.0 comes equipped with a handsome set of 16-inch alloy wheels, LED automatic on/off headlights, LED taillights, and DRLs, plus rain-sensing windshield wipers and body-colored power side mirrors. Keyless entry with remote fob comes standard, but you’ll still have to push a button on the fob to lock and unlock the doors.
The Mazda3 features a comprehensive list of standard driver assists, including forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, radar adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Also standard are automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and a driver attention monitor. That’s a pretty impressive list of features considering the entry-level price.
The Mazda3 also comes with a complete set of airbags, including front knee airbags.
Stepping inside the Mazda3 reveals black cloth front seats with manual adjustment and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. A 7-inch LCD shows a speedometer flanked by an analog tachometer and fuel/temperature gauges. The tilt/telescoping steering wheel features audio, Bluetooth, and adaptive cruise control buttons.
Further amenities include single-zone manual air conditioning, power windows with one-touch up/down, power door locks, a push-button starter, an electronic parking brake, and sun visor extensions.
The Mazda3’s infotainment setup is rudimentary but gets the job done. It includes an 8.8-inch display operated via a console-mounted rotary controller and buttons. The system does not have a touch-screen, nor is there a CD player. You get an AM/FM radio, HD radio, Pandora internet radio integration, and Mazda Connected Services, plus SMS text message audio delivery and reply. An 8-speaker audio system comes standard, as do two USB audio inputs.
The base Mazda3 comes in only two colors: Sonic Silver and Jet Black.

The hatchback adds a rear wiper/washer.

For the money, we think the Select trim offers the features buyers have come to expect without a significant price increase.
Building off the 2.5 S, the Select brings additional driver assists, such as a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. It also gains Mazda’s Advanced Key proximity key fob that allows the doors to unlock and open simply by having the fob in your pocket.
The Select rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, with a gray finish for the hatchback or silver for the sedan. Other exterior upgrades include integrated door mirror turn signals and more paint choices, including new for 2022 Platinum Quartz Metallic.
Convenience upgrades include dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a rear seat folding armrest with cup holders.

The Premium is the most lavish of the normally-aspirated Mazda3 trims, adding upscale features to the Preferred’s content to create a mini luxury sedan.
Building off the Preferred’s standard equipment, the Premium adds a 12-speaker Bose audio system with a 3-month free trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, a head-up display, and leather seating in black or red for the hatchback and black or white for the sedan. Signature LED headlights, and combination taillights add additional LEDs to create a more brilliant dispersal pattern, while adaptive headlights improve nighttime visibility by turning in the direction of the steering wheel.
The Premium trim gains traffic sign recognition that projects various road signs on the head-up display, such as speed limit, stop signs, and road warnings.
For the Premium hatchback, Mazda offers the option of a 6-speed manual, but only on front-drive models. Automatic-equipped models gain steering-wheel paddle shifters.

The Turbo trim comes standard with a 250-horsepower turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, this engine has one caveat: to get the full 250 horsepower requires using 93 octane gas. Choosing regular 87 octane reduces output to 227 horsepower.
The Turbo’s equipment list closely mimics the Premium, minus navigation and leather seating. Thankfully, you can add navigation with a simple $450 navigation SD card.
The Turbo includes a heated leather steering wheel, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, black or greige (a mixing of gray and beige) leatherette upholstery, and heated windshield wiper de-icers.
Unique to the Turbo model are 18-inch black alloy wheels, larger tailpipes, and Turbo badging.

The Turbo Premium Plus receives more active driver assists, with standard rear automatic braking and rear cross-traffic braking. Perforated leather upholstery is standard, as is a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, navigation, and Mazda’s Traffic Jam Assist that adjusts the vehicle’s following distance to match the traffic ahead.
