With its station wagon style body, the 2022 Mini Clubman is a tad more practical than the regular 4-door Mini.
The quirky Clubman comes with split rear doors and a whimsical dashboard design. These features, and the Clubman’s highly customizable specification, make the vehicle an interesting, if more expensive, alternative to the more prosaic offerings in the small SUV/hatchback market.
Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, and Kia all make small SUVs that function very well and make more sense financially than the Clubman. The question is: How much value do you place on the distinctive character of the Mini?
2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman/All4 Classic (starting at $29,900)
The 5-passenger Mini Cooper S Clubman is a little roomier, especially in the rear and in terms of cargo space, than the standard 4-door Mini. This is due to the Clubman’s longer body.
The vehicle runs on 17-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires, and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 189 horsepower.
Power is routed to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission, or an optional 7-speed automatic for $1,500. The Cooper S Clubman All4 Classic trim offers all-wheel drive (AWD) for an extra $3,000. The All4 also comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard in all trims.
Standard equipment includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, heated mirrors, cruise control, LED headlights, and rearview camera. Note that the Classic trim does not come as standard with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Apple CarPlay compatibility is an extra cost option, but Android Auto users are left out in the cold.
The safety equipment provided is not the most generous, especially compared to small SUVs from mainstream brands like Honda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, and Mazda. Standard are forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and rear park distance control.
There are numerous options, many of which focus on exterior finish features, plus packages available. But buyers need to beware of ticking too many boxes, as the vehicle’s total price will escalate fast.
Although the Cooper S Clubman Classic trim is hardly a bargain, we think it is actually the best value of the trims. The Signature trim makes various packages available with some useful features, including navigation and Apple CarPlay integration, but the costs involved are substantial.
Adding in the $850 destination fee, the Mini Cooper S Clubman Classic sticker comes to $30,750. Given 3% financing over 60 months and no down payment, that would produce a monthly payment of $528.
