In a discussion of all-electric vehicles (EVs), you might not think to include the 2022 Nissan Leaf. It certainly doesn’t have the high profile of, say, a Tesla Model 3. But, what it does have is an affordable price.
In fact, Nissan lopped off roughly $4,000 from the Leaf’s 2021 base prices for 2022. And that’s before factoring in the up to $7,500 in federal incentives Leaf buyers may be in line for.
Nissan offers the Leaf with two different battery packs. The smaller capacity battery delivers an estimated range of 149 miles. Plus models with the larger battery capacity can go an estimated 226 miles on a full charge.
You can buy the smaller battery version as the Leaf S and Leaf SV. The larger battery capacity can be equipped as the Leaf S Plus, Leaf SV Plus, and Leaf SL Plus.
The regular Leaf comes with a 110 kW electric motor and a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery. It makes 147 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque.
Estimating its range at 149 miles, the government pegs its fuel efficiency at an estimated gasoline miles-per-gallon equivalent of 123 MPGe city, 99 MPGe on the highway, and 111 MPGe in combined driving.
With a 220-volt charger, the total charging time is 7.5 hours.
With its larger 160 kW motor and 62 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Leaf Plus makes 214 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Its estimated range is 226 miles.
Its estimated fuel efficiency is 118 MPGe city, 97 MPGe highway, and 108 MPGe combined in the S Plus. In the SV Plus and SL Plus, those numbers drop a bit to 114 MPGe city, 94 MPGe highway, and 104 MPGe combined.
Using a 240-volt charger, a full charge requires an estimated 11.5 hours.
Both versions come with e-Pedal, which allows accelerating and braking through depressing or releasing the accelerator pedal.
Both also come with three drive modes: Normal, Eco, and B-mode. Eco assists in limiting motor and HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) output. B-mode more aggressively engages regenerative braking when decelerating.
