The Nissan Rogue was all-new last year, and while it earned significant praise in most areas, performance was not one of them. For 2022, Nissan has solved this issue with a new turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine good for 201 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel-drive available on all trims.
Compared to the competitors like the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Honda CR-V, the Rogue looks pretty good. It comes standard with a host of sophisticated driver aids, and its infotainment and equipment upgrades are among the best in the business.
2022 Nissan Rogue S (Starting at $26,700)
The Rogue S offers most of the basics needed in a modern compact SUV, with a few unexpected extras uncommon at this price.
The list starts with standard driver-assists like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward collision warning, and lane-departure warning. There’s also a complete set of airbags, including two-row side-curtains and rear-seat side-impact airbags. Nissan’s Rear Door Alert comes standard. It reminds the driver to check the rear seat before locking and departing the vehicle.
Along with the required traction and stability controls, the Rogue S also features hill-start assist (keeps the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on a steep incline) and three driving modes: Normal, Eco, and Sport. The driving modes adjust throttle input, transmission shift points, and steering response.
All-wheel-drive models get a rotary selector switch with additional modes for Auto, Snow, and Off-Road. These modes also work with the braking and stability systems for better traction and cornering on various surfaces.
The Rogue S rides on stylish 17-inch alloy wheels with a temporary compact spare tucked under the rear cargo floor. The Rogue S features automatic LED headlights, LED DRLs (daytime running lights), and LED taillights. Power mirrors, a rear spoiler, rear parking sensors, and rear privacy glass round out the exterior appointments.
Nissan provides a rather handsome interior for a base model, and although the color is limited to charcoal grey cloth, it’s offset by a swath of light brown covering the dash pad and upper door panels. A manually operated driver’s seat includes manual height adjustment but no lumbar support. The second-row seats are divided in a 60/40 split and include reclining seatbacks. Rear seat passengers also enjoy air vents built into the rear console.
Interior comfort and convenience for the Rogue S include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters plus controls for audio, Bluetooth, and cruise control. Remote keyless entry, a one-touch up/down power driver’s window, and an oversized glovebox are just a few of the thoughtful touches added for good measure. Also standard is manual air conditioning, sliding sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors, a drive computer with readouts for fuel economy, outside temperature, miles to empty, and a tire pressure monitor.
The infotainment setup is pretty basic, but it gets the job done. It features an 8-inch color display with AM/FM radio and four speakers. The touch screen includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and access to SiriusXM and Siri Eyes Free. The system also provides voice recognition software, a rearview monitor, streaming Bluetooth capability, and two USB ports, one Type-A and one Type-C, for charging and iPod interface.
There are no option packages for the Rogue S. As with all the Rogue trims, all-wheel drive adds another $1,500 to the bottom line.
With the $1,175 destination charge, the 2022 Nissan Rogue S costs $27,875. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $501. See 2022 Nissan Rogue S models for sale
