2022 Subaru Legacy: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 Subaru Legacy goes up against very tough competition in the form of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Mazda6 sedans.

As such, the Legacy has its work cut out with its rather pedestrian exterior design and a lackluster standard engine. On the other hand, the Legacy does come with all-wheel drive (AWD), a useful feature not offered in the Accord and Mazda6.

2022 Subaru Legacy Premium (starting at $25,245)

Our recommendation is to skip the $22,995 Legacy base model in favor of the Premium trim, which represents the best value.

The Legacy is a 5-passenger sedan, riding on 17-inch steel wheels and powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering a just-adequate 182 horsepower. Performance is not aided by the Legacy’s continuously variable transmission (CVT), which makes for sluggish acceleration and a raspy engine note under full throttle.

We do like the inclusion of AWD in all Legacy trims. Subaru has made AWD a key part of its vehicles, and the feature is welcome for any buyer who has to deal with inclement weather on a regular basis.

The base Legacy comes with dual 7-inch displays, 60/40 folding rear seat, 4-speaker audio system, and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety systems and driver aids includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane centering assist.

As standard, the Premium trim upgrades the base specification with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated door mirrors, heated front seats, 11.6-inch touchscreen, leather wrapped steering wheel, 6-speaker audio system.

The Premium trim can be ordered with a $1,000 package that adds blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, LED fog lights, and push-button start.

A second package for $2,595, includes the above features, plus a power moonroof, and navigation.

Adding in the $960 destination fee, the Legacy Premium sticker comes to $26,250. Given 3% financing over 60 months and no down payment, that would produce a monthly payment of $450. Find a Subaru Legacy Premium for sale

2022 Subaru Legacy Premium includes:

  • Large center screen — 11.6-in. touchscreen dominates cabin
  • Dual-zone climate control — Driver and passenger can set individual temps
  • 10-way power driver’s seat — Easily adjust seat for variety of body shapes and sizes

2022 Subaru Legacy Sport (starting at $28,790)

To the Premium trim, the Legacy Sport grade introduces 18-inch wheels, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, auto up/down windows, fog lights, and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Sport also comes with blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, plus a power moonroof.

If we stick with the same 60-month loan at 3% financing as used for the Premium, a Legacy Sport would cost an extra $60 per month. Find a Subaru Legacy Sport for sale

2022 Subaru Legacy Sport includes:

  • Blindspot detection — Deservedly popular safety feature
  • Larger wheels — 18-inch rims give the Legacy extra curb appeal
  • Auto up/down windows — Nice convenience feature

2022 Subaru Legacy Limited (starting at $29,945)

On top of the Premium grade, the Limited trim dresses up the cabin with perforated leather seats, 8-way power front passenger seat, heated rear outboard seats, and 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

A $2,045 package can be added with navigation system, heated steering wheel, power moonroof, and a driver fatigue monitoring system.

With destination fee included, the Limited will cost $30,905, for a monthly payment of close to $530 using our 3%/60-month payment calculation. Find a Subaru Legacy Limited for sale

2022 Subaru Limited includes:

  • Harman Kardon audio — A great sounding system with 576 watts
  • Heated rear seats — Outboard rear passengers gain warming capability
  • Attention monitor — Helps let the driver know when it’s break time

2022 Subaru Legacy Limited XT/Touring XT (starting at $34,495/$36,195)

If you want a Legacy with more spirited performance than the base engine, the Limited XT substitutes the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with a potent turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. This engine produces 260 horsepower, sufficient to turn the Subaru into an engaging driving partner.

Otherwise, the XT features all the equipment found in the Limited trim and includes the extras in the Limited’s optional package.

Step up to the $36,195 Touring XT trim and Subaru throws in the works. On top of all the above features, the Touring XT adds power-folding mirrors, Nappa leather seat trim, cooled front seats, faux leather cabin trim accents, chrome, and black exterior trim, and a front view camera.

As nice as all these frills sound, we feel the Legacy Limited makes most more financial sense than the XT grades if you want to go upscale from the Premium trim.

The Limited XT costs $37,155 including the destination fee. With 3% financing, that works out at $608 a month in payments over 60 months, about $78 more than the Limited. Find a Subaru Legacy Limited XT for sale or Find a Subaru Legacy Touring XT for sale

2022 Subaru Legacy Limited XT includes:

  • Turbocharged engine — More powerful engine makes for fun driving
  • Cooled seats — Nice to have in a hot summer
  • CD player — If you still love discs, this is the Legacy to get
