The 2023 GMC Hummer EV pickup is unlike any pickup on the market, including Ford’s F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, and the Rivian R1T. Looking very much like the Hummer H2 SUV merged with a Chevy Avalanche, the GMC Hummer EV offers rugged styling, an off-road capable suspension, and zero emissions.
For now, the Hummer EV pickup offers just two trims: Edition 1 and EV3X. Later in the year, a less expensive (and less well-equipped) EV2 and EV2X will arrive but will wear a 2024 model year designation.
2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup EV3X (starting at $104,650)
As with all Hummer EVs, the EV3X rides on GM’s Ultium platform. It’s a flexible battery platform used on EVs across numerous vehicle types. In the case of the Hummer EV, it’s a 3,000-pound double-stacked battery pack giving the three electric motors (two in the back and one up front) a maximum estimated range of 329 miles.
Standard equipment for the EV3X includes 22-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires and a MultiPro tailgate with a built-in step.
Electronically-controlled torque vectoring uses the brakes to vary power between inside and outside rear wheels, helping improve traction when going into a sharp curve and maintaining its intended course through the corner.
A set of removable opaque Infinity Roof panels covers the front and rear seats, with an option to upgrade with Transparent Sky panels. Regardless of your choice, all four overhead panels fit into separate carry cases stored in the Hummer EV’s power-operated front “eTrunk.”
A rear power window that raises and lowers at the push of a button further adds to the cabin’s open-air feeling.
The eTrunk offers 11.3 cubic feet of storage space, but if you need more room, there’s a 5-foot bed and under cargo floor storage for the charging cable and the Infinity Roof’s front I-bar. There’s also a large storage compartment on the driver’s side rear quarter panel.
The EV3X hosts a multitude of technological wizardry, starting with its suspension and steering. The EV3X rides on an adaptive air suspension that offers up to 13 inches of wheel travel front and rear.
An available Extract Mode lifts the Hummer EV six inches above its standard ride height, ensuring you won’t get hung up on hidden stumps or boulders.
When it comes to maneuvering, the EV3X is unmatched in its ability to escape difficult situations. That’s because it comes with 4-wheel steering, which allows the rear wheels to turn about 10 degrees.
This clever concept gives the Hummer EV a turning circle on par with some small SUVs and allows its massive body to squeeze through tight off-road terrain (or out of a cramped parking spot). It also permits the Hummer EV to operate in Crab Walk mode, a feature that utilizes the 4-wheel steering to move the Hummer EV diagonally at low speeds.
Next up: high-definition Surround Vision. This system of cameras provides a 360-degree view outside the vehicle, a definite bonus considering the Hummer EV’s high ride height, thick pillars, and somewhat narrow side windows.
Hitch Guidance with Hitch View uses cameras to help when hooking up a trailer and backing into a narrow parking space. Trailer brake control helps regulate braking when towing, while Smart Trailer Integration lets your smartphone interact and monitor various systems onboard a smart trailer.
Additional equipment includes a proximity key fob and push-button start, a digital rearview mirror, tri-zone climate control with front and rear controls, a bed view camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a wireless charging pad.
Standard EV3X amenities include heated and ventilated 12-way power front seats with 4-way lumbar support, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel that tilts and telescopes, heated rear seats, driver’s seat memory, and two 120-volt outlets.
The Hummer EV Pickup’s infotainment system includes a massive 13.4-inch touchscreen complete with some of the most impressive graphics we’ve ever seen in a truck. It provides navigation, Google built-in, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth streaming, and advanced voice recognition.
A second 12.3-inch screen comprises the instrument cluster with configurable screens for various off-road situations.
Audio reproduction comes from a 14-speaker Bose premium Surround Sound system.
The Hummer EV3X comes equipped with the latest in driver-assist technology. Included as standard are forward and rear collision alert with pedestrian detection, automatic front and rear emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and a blind-spot monitor that extends to cover a trailer.
Also standard are lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, a following-distance indicator, automatic high-beam headlights, a safety alert seat (vibrates to alert the driver of danger), and a parking assist system that can automatically park the Hummer EV in a parallel or perpendicular fashion.
On the cutting edge of autonomous driving is GM’s Super Cruise. With Super Cruise, the Hummer EV Pickup can travel over 200,000 miles of approved roads, driving itself without driver intervention. The system can even change lanes when the turn signal is activated. Note: The driver must be looking ahead and focused on the road for Super Cruise to function.
Optional equipment for the 2023 GMC Hummer EV3X includes a larger battery pack for up to 1,000 horsepower and a 329-mile range. When so equipped, the available Watts to Freedom (a tongue-in-cheek play on WTF) mode lowers the vehicle by two inches and can catapult the 9,000-pound Hummer EV Pickup to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. While accelerating, the WTF system includes nifty sound effects pumped through the Hummer’s stereo.
The most desirable option for many will be the Extreme Off-Road Package. This includes 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, 18-inch black aluminum wheels, electronically locking front and rear differentials (with virtual rear lockers), and ball-spline half shafts.
Also in the Off-Road Package are additional skid plate protection, rocker protectors with assist steps, and the amazing UltraVision camera system.
With UltraVision, the driver can access 18 separate camera views, including underbody forward- and rear-facing camera lenses (with washers) to ensure you’ll always be able to see under the truck, even as the dirt and mud fly.
With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup EV3X costs $106,245. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $1,909. See 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup EV3X models for sale
2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup EV3X includes:
