The 2023 GMC Terrain takes the compact SUV upmarket, with more rugged styling versus the average small SUV and a wide range of trims, price points, and features.
Unlike the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Ford Escape, the Terrain offers a modified AT4 trim intended for light off-road use that compares favorably with the Mazda CX-50, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4 Adventure.
There’s also a luxurious Denali trim.
Regardless of trim, all Terrain models come with a 175-horsepower 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Terrain is a front-wheel-drive (FWD) SUV but offers the option of all-wheel drive (AWD), which comes standard on the AT4 and Denali trims.
Front-wheel-drive GMC Terrain models are rated by the EPA at 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. With AWD, that drops only a tiny amount, to 24 mpg city/28 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.
2023 GMC Terrain SLE (starting at $28,400)
The SLE comes surprisingly well equipped for an entry-level trim, offering features and optional upgrades that may surprise you. However, its nearly $28,500 starting price is also well above that of most entry-level competitors.
Standard equipment includes automatic on/off LED headlights with a delay feature, LED taillights, heated power side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, deep-tinted rear privacy glass, and an acoustic laminated windshield that helps reduce wind and road noise.
Notable features include a capless fuel filler system that eliminates the screw-on cap, and eBoost electric/hydraulic power brake assist that significantly improves stopping distance. Also standard is a keyless entry system that lets you unlock the doors and start the car without having to remove the key fob from your purse or pocket.
The Terrain’s cabin features cloth upholstery covering manually adjustable front seats, a fold-flat front passenger seat, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with cargo area release levers.
The SLE comes standard with single-zone manual air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, power windows with a one-touch up/down driver’s power window, and express down on all four windows.

The suite contains forward collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a following distance indicator.
The Terrain SLE comes with a system to remind the driver to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle, a rear backup camera, and Teen Driver, which gives parents the ability to monitor their teen’s driving habits as well as set limits on top speed, radio volume, and the like.
The SLE offers several option packages, including two additional driver aid packages. The Terrain Pro Safety Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, the Safety Alert Seat, and rear parking sensors, with the option to add a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert if desired.
