2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Choosing the Right Trim

Few can claim to be true off-road warriors in the midsize SUV world. But the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee certainly can. Its luxury credentials make it as welcome on Rodeo Drive as on the Rubicon Trail. And while the Grand Cherokee continues to move upscale, there are still nicely equipped entry-level trims affordable to the average American.

Jeep offers two engine options, three different 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems, a steel spring or air suspension, and enough high-tech and luxury-oriented features to make one think they’re looking at some Land Rover knockoff. There’s also an extended L model reviewed separately. The popular Trailhawk trim moves to the plug-in hybrid category and is reviewed separately.

At the entry level, the Grand Cherokee competes with the likes of the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Edge, Volkswagen Atlas, and the Honda Passport. At the high-end, the Grand Cherokee rivals luxury models like the Land Rover Defender, BMW X5, and Lexus RX.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
(starting at $39,000), Laredo 4×4 ($41,000)

The first of four trims is the Laredo. Long known for its value, the Laredo is nothing fancy, at least when compared to its more expensive siblings. However, the Laredo still benefits from a sleek design, handsome interior, and numerous high-tech features.

Standard on the Laredo is a 290-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission. Opting for 4WD brings Jeep’s Quadra-Trac I full-time 4WD system with a single-speed transfer case and disconnecting front axle. The standard fuel tank holds 23 gallons. Properly equipped, the Laredo is rated to tow up to 6,200 pounds.

Because safety is essential to everyone, Jeep equips the Laredo with several standard driver-assist systems, including full-speed forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Also standard are lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, ParkSense Rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control with stop/go.

Full airbag coverage includes front, front side-impact, front knee, and side-curtain airbags. Other safety systems include a rear backup camera and a rear-seat warning feature that reminds the driver to check the back seat before leaving the vehicle.

The Grand Cherokee Laredo rides on 17-inch painted aluminum wheels and features rear privacy glass, acoustic laminated front door glass, heated side mirrors, and LED headlights and taillights.

Keyless Enter-N-Go uses a proximity transmitter key fob allowing locking or unlocking of the doors when touching either front door handle and starting the engine at the push of a button.

The driver enjoys an 8-way power seat, while the passenger has to settle for a 4-way manually adjustable version. The Laredo comes standard with cloth upholstery and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat.

Cabin amenities include one-touch up/down front power windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with shift paddles, LED interior lighting, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

An 8.4-inch touchscreen serves as the nerve center for the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which includes a 6-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto. Through various subscription plans, the system can host SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Jeep Connect apps and services.

There are two USB ports up front, two more in the rear seat, and two 12-volt outlets — one in the console and one in the cargo bay.

Options for the Laredo come mostly bundled into packages. Among the more notable upgrades are a power sunroof, 18-inch wheels, and various exterior add-ons.

The Altitude Package adds leather-trimmed seats, a black headliner, 20-inch gloss black wheels, gloss black roof rails, remote start, and a power liftgate. Also included are heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 115-volt outlet, rain-sensing wipers, and a wireless charging pad.

The Luxury Tech I Group includes most of the same upgrades found in the Altitude package, minus the 20-inch black wheels and gloss-black Altitude upgrades.

Buyers can also opt for a Trailer Tow Prep Group that brings a full-size 18-inch spare tire, automatic headlamp leveling, 180-amp alternator, a rear load-leveling suspension, heavy-duty engine cooling, Class IV hitch receiver, and 7- and 4-pin wiring harnesses.

The Tow Prep Group also features Jeep’s Trailer Hitch Zoom, which assists the driver when hooking up a trailer. The system uses a rear camera to show the ball and hitch and features a 4x-zoom mode.

With the $1,795 destination fee, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo costs $40,795. On a 60-month loan with 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $733. See 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo models for sale

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee get?

The Grand Cherokee with the 3.6-liter engine is rated by the EPA at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/ 22 mpg combined. Figures are the same when adding 4WD.

With the 5.7-liter V8 and standard 4WD, fuel economy dips to 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway/17 mpg combined.

  • Which 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the most safety?

Neither the U.S. government nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash-tested the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, given Jeep’s commitment to safety and the numerous passive and active systems made standard on the Grand Cherokee, we’re reasonably confident it will perform in line with other SUVs in its class.
