The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe combines two elements almost unheard of in the automotive world: world-class off-road ability and hybrid-electric technology. True to Jeep’s mission, the 4xe (it’s said “4 by E”) delivers impressive horsepower and torque, can travel up to 21 miles solely on electric power and comes equipped with the company’s best off-road hardware on the Rubicon trim.
Although not inexpensive, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe isn’t outrageously priced, and it may qualify for a $7,500 tax credit from the federal government.
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe
(starting at $54,765)
Beginning with the Sahara trim ensures the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe comes pretty well equipped. It also means those looking for a sub-$35,000 model similar to the gas-only Wrangler Sport will be sadly disappointed.
On the mechanical side, the Sahara 4xe combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with dual electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack. The 4xe’s total output from this setup cranks up to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Toss in Jeep’s Selec-Trac full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) and Dana 44 heavy-duty axles, and you have a formidable off-roader. A limited-slip rear differential is available.
Standard equipment for the Sahara 4xe includes 20-inch wheels, all-season tires, the Sunrider removable fabric soft top, full steel doors with power windows and door locks, power heated side mirrors, and LED headlights and fog lights.
Underbody protection includes skid plating over the transfer case, transmission, and fuel tank.
Human body protection is also a priority. The Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe comes standard with front side-impact airbags, roll mitigation, trailer sway control, a rear backup camera, and hill-start assist. Jeep’s Selec-Speed comes standard. It’s a type of cruise control for off-roading that holds the vehicle at a steady, slow speed while climbing obstacles.
Other driver-assist systems are available but as extra-cost options.
The Sahara’s cabin is a nice place to spend time. It features manual low-back bucket seats, McKinley leather trim, and 2-way driver’s seat lumbar support. There is ample LED lighting throughout the cabin, including in the cupholders. A full-length console up front provides decent storage space, while the 60/40-split-folding rear seats can hold passengers, cargo, or some combination thereof. You can remove the carpeting to reveal a set of drain plugs, which is handy for when you need to wash down the interior.
Additional cabin amenities include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, two 12-volt outlets, a 115-volt outlet, and Active Noise Control sound canceling. Keyless entry with push-button start is also standard.
When it comes to infotainment, the Sahara doesn’t disappoint. Jeep’s Uconnect 4C system comes standard with navigation, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and HD Radio. There is also a bundle of SiriusXM satellite radio upgrades with generous trial periods. You get one year of SiriusXM Guardian Services, five years of Travel Link and Traffic Plus, and six months of the standard SiriusXM music channels.
With four USB charge ports, you’ll never have to worry about not having enough places to plug in. And, with the standard 522-watt Alpine audio system, you’ll never have to worry about the wind drowning out your favorite tunes.
As for options, the Sahara 4xe has lots to offer. Not interested in the standard soft top? You can choose up to 10 different roof styles, including a 3-piece Freedom hardtop or the Sky One-Touch roof with a power retracting cloth roof panel built into the hardtop.
Several door options are available, including half doors with zippered plastic windows in regular or premium cloth upper panels. A mirror kit allows you to bolt the side mirrors directly to the Jeep’s body when removing the doors. Other features include a front grille-mounted camera, a Corning Gorilla Glass windshield, and a remote start with a proximity key fob.
With its heated front seats, heated steering wheel, and remote start, the Cold Weather Group is a must-have for northern residents, while the Trailer Tow Group is a must for anyone planning to tow.
Lastly, the Sahara 4xe offers two driver safety groups. Combined, they add a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop, forward collision warning and braking, rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights.
With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe costs $56,360. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $1,013. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe models for sale
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe includes:
- Alpine audio – Along with the advanced 8.4-inch Uconnect system, this 552-watt 9-speaker Alpine audio system makes it easy to enjoy your favorite tunes from multiple sources.
- Selec-Trac – A full-time 4WD system, providing superior traction when off-roading at lower speeds or on paved roads at highway speeds.
- Available driver aids – Features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking make the Wrangler Unlimited safer when driving in the urban jungle.
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe
(starting at $58,595)
Take all that’s great about the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and add electrification and better gas mileage, and buying the 4xe version seems like a no-brainer.
Building off the Sahara trim, the Rubicon adds a more robust 4WD setup, including Jeep’s 4:1 Rock-Trac full-time 4WD with shift-on-the-fly transfer case, electronic locking front and rear differentials, and smaller 17-inch wheels with off-road tires. To help with better wheel articulation, the Rubicon comes equipped with an electronically controlled disconnecting front sway bar.
Additional body protection for the Rubicon includes heavy-duty steel rock rails.
Like the Sahara, the Rubicon includes the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen, Alpine audio, LED headlights and fog lights, and automatic climate control.
The Rubicon swaps the Sahara’s McKinley seat upholstery for full cloth, but buyers have the option to upgrade to full leather.
Options groups and equipment for the Rubicon mirror those of the Sahara. However, there are a few exceptions, such as the ability to add steel bumpers. Regrettably, the Rubicon 4xe does not get the standard Rubicon’s Xtreme Recon tire package that upgrades to 35-inch tires.
Adding the $1,595 destination fee, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe costs $60,190. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $1,082. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe models for sale
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe includes:
- Rock-Trac – Jeep’s advanced 4WD system includes a 73.1:1 crawl mode, allowing the Rubicon to inch its way up, over, or down without braking.
- Disconnecting sway bar – With the push of a button, the front sway bar electronically disconnects from the suspension, allowing the front wheels greater freedom over uneven terrain.
- Tru-Lok – Allows immediate locking of the front and rear axles.
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe (starting at $60,540)
The luxurious High Altitude 4xe includes the Sahara’s standard features and most of its optional groups. With limited paint colors, the High Altitude won’t stand out the same way as the Sahara, so that’s something to think about if you like bold colors.
The High Altitude distinguishes itself with a body-colored 3-piece hardtop roof, matching grille, door handles, and fender flares. Twenty-inch styled alloy wheels come standard, but the High Altitude doesn’t offer the half-door option.
Standard equipment includes a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, rear parking sensors, and a proximity key fob that allows unlocking the doors by simply touching the handle.
Leather seats are standard.
With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe costs $62,135. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $1,116. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude 4xe models for sale

- Leather seats – A nice upgrade, easier to clean than cloth, and befitting the High Altitude’s lofty status.
- Body-colored hardtop – Another benefit of the High Altitude is the standard body-colored hardtop that helps keep the cabin safe and quiet, but with a removable top panel so you can still feel like you’re riding in a Jeep.
