2023 Toyota Tundra: Choosing the Right Trim

In the world of full-size pickups, none has a better reputation for durability, longevity, reliability, and resale than the 2023 Toyota Tundra.

While it lacks the towing and varied bed and cab configurations of trucks like the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado, the Tundra covers a lot of turf, offering features and abilities demanded by most half-ton pickup buyers. Like its competition, the Tundra wears many hats — basic utility truck, rugged off-road adventurer, and luxurious family hauler.

The Tundra’s standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 feels like a big V8 but returns fuel economy in the high teens and low 20s. However, unlike some competitors, the Tundra doesn’t offer additional engine options, such as diesel, V8, or EV, although a hybrid engine is offered in the Platinum and 1794 and exclusive to the off-road-ready Tundra TRD Pro and luxury Capstone trims (hybrid reviewed separately).

2023 Toyota Tundra SR: $37,865

The entry-level SR is a basic truck, short on frills but big on value. It comes standard with an i-Force 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD). Part-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) is optional.

The SR’s horsepower and torque figures are lower than all the other trims with the same engine, which jump to 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The difference results in slightly better fuel economy but significantly reduced towing. If you’re buying this truck for maximum hauling abilities, we suggest moving to the SR5 trim instead.

The max tow rating for the SR is 8,300 pounds versus 12,000 for a 4×2 SR5 Double Cab. However, the SR has one of the best payload figures of the Tundra trims, tied with the SR5 at 1,940 pounds.

Configurations for the SR include a Double Cab with a 6.5-foot or 8-foot bed and the CrewMax crew cab with a 5.5-foot bed.

The SR’s standard roster includes a black grille, 18-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, washer-linked variable wipers, heated power side mirrors, and keyless entry with proximity key fob and touch-to-unlock door handles.

An aluminum-reinforced bed includes a deck rail header, an easy-lower-and-lift tailgate, an LED trailer reverse-assist light, and a tailgate spoiler. A class-exclusive vertical power rear window that lowers into the cab wall comes standard on the CrewMax, while the Double Cab gets a center section horizontal power sliding window.

Moving to the cab, you’ll find 1-touch auto up/down power windows, power door locks, a push-button starter, LED map lights, an overhead console, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

The SR features cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a 60/40-split folding rear seat with under-seat storage, and a 4.2-inch color multi-information display.

Amenities include single-zone air automatic climate control and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with 6-speaker audio. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with SiriusXM satellite radio and trial subscriptions to Toyota Safety Connect, Wi-Fi Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect apps.

In keeping with Toyota’s commitment to safety, the Tundra SR comes standard with Safety Sense 2.5, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition.

The Tundra SR also has a rear backup camera, hill-start assist, a tire pressure monitor, and eight airbags.

An available Tow Package adds a Class IV trailer hitch receiver and a 7-pin connector wiring harness.

With the $1,795 delivery charge, the 2023 Toyota Tundra SR 4×2 Double Cab costs $39,660. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $748. See 2023 Toyota Tundra SR models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Tundra SR includes:

  • LED headlights – The Tundra’s LED headlights use less energy while producing more light than conventional halogen bulbs.
  • Adaptive cruise control – Maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, slowing and even stopping without input from the driver.
  • Power sliding rear window – A CrewMax exclusive, the Tundra’s rear window retracts into the body, creating a massive opening behind the second row.

2023 Toyota Tundra SR5: $43,370

The SR5 is a better choice for budget-conscious shoppers. It costs a bit more than the SR but comes with a more powerful engine, Selectable Drive Modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport), better towing numbers, more configurations, and more optional equipment. It’s also the best-selling trim in the Tundra lineup.

The SR5 expands its bed options, offering the CrewMax with a choice of a 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed. CrewMax cabs with the 6.5-foot bed upgrade to a 32.3-gallon fuel tank.

Additional exterior enhancements include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, a deck rail system with four adjustable cleats, black fender trim, and a black grille with a body-colored surround.

CrewMax models gain three more speakers for a total of nine.

Buyers can opt for the TRD Off-Road Package that brings 18-inch TRD off-road wheels and all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension with Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and TRD customization.

On SR5 4WD models, the package gains an electronic locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, a blind-spot monitor, a Panoramic View Monitor, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor with one additional camera lens underneath the truck.

The TRD Off-Road Premium Package builds off the above packages, adding SofTex upholstery, 8-way heated power front seats with 2-way power lumbar support, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Buyers can order the contents of the Premium Package without the TRD packages.

The TRD Sport Package adds 20-inch black alloy wheels and a lowered sport suspension with Bilstein shocks.

The SR5 Convenience Package adds heated side mirrors, a blind-spot monitor, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, and a 32.2-gallon fuel tank.

The Premium Audio Package adds a 14-inch monitor, two 120-volt outlets (one in the rear seat and one in the bed), and LED bed lights.

The Advanced Off-Road Technology Package adds a blind-spot monitor, front and rear park assist with automatic braking, a Multi-Terrain Monitor, Trailer Backup Guide, and a digital rearview mirror.

The SX Package is primarily an appearance package, adding color-keyed door handles and bumpers, black fender trim, a black cloth interior, 18-inch black alloy wheels, and SX decals.

Notable standalone options include heated tow mirrors, load-level rear air suspension, a leather steering wheel, skid plates, and 20-inch wheels.

With the $1,795 delivery charge, the 2023 Toyota Tundra SR5 4×2 Double Cab costs $45,165. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $812. See 2023 Toyota Tundra SR5 models for sale near you

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Toyota Tundra trim?

We think the SR5 is the best trim, if not the most popular. It’s priced right and offers loads of optional equipment, allowing for personal customization down to the last detail. Luxury buyers should go right for the Platinum or 1794 Edition.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2023 Toyota Tundra get?

The 2WD Tundra SR gets 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined. Adding 4WD lowers fuel economy figures to 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, which also happens to be the exact figures for the 4WD SR5.

The 2WD SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 get 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway/20 mpg combined, while the Limited and Platinum models with 4WD see figures of 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

  • Which 2023 Toyota Tundra offers the most safety?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Toyota Tundra CrewMax its highest score of Good in all crash test categories and named it a Top Safety Pick + recipient.

The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 system makes even the base Tundra a safe bet, but we’d go for any trim that offers the additional blind-spot monitor, front and rear park assist, and rear cross-traffic detection.
