2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge: Choosing the Right Trim

In the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin, you get all the style, features, and safety afforded by the XC40 hybrid but in a pure EV offering up to 223 miles on a single charge. In keeping with its green aims, the XC40 Recharge offers features like a 100% leather-free interior and an air purification system.

However, the XC40 Recharge doesn’t come cheap, with the midlevel Plus trim costing about the same as the larger and better-equipped Genesis GV60. The XC40 Recharge competes with the more expensive Jaguar I-Pace, similarly priced Audi Q4 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y.

Like the standard XC40, Volvo offers the Recharge in three trims (Core, Plus, and Ultimate) but with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), hence the “Twin” designation in the XC40 Recharge’s full name.

2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Core
(starting at $53,550)

Like all Volvo XC40 Recharge SUVs, the Core features dual electric motors and a 78-kWh battery pack. Together, the electric motors produce 402 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.7 seconds.

Standard features on the Core include LED headlights with automatic high beams, 19-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding and auto-dimming side mirrors.

The Core features keyless entry with a proximity key fob allowing for unlocking the doors without pushing a button on the fob. A hands-free power liftgate also is standard, activated by swiping your foot under the rear bumper.

In place of a spare tire, the XC40 Recharge has a tire repair kit complete with an electric air compressor and tire sealant.

Being a Volvo means safety is a top priority, and the XC40 Recharge Core doesn’t disappoint. Standard driver assists include forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic detection with auto-braking.

Run-Off Road Mitigation steers this electric Volvo back into its lane when detecting it’s about to leave the road. Additional systems include a driver monitor and road sign information you may have missed (displays posted speed limits, no-passing zones, etc.).

Volvo’s Slippery Road Alert warning system and Oncoming Lane Mitigation come installed also. This last system can help steer the vehicle back into its lane if it detects you’ve crossed the center lane marker and traveled into the path of an oncoming car.

A rear backup camera and rear parking sensors wrap up the safety systems.

Moving to the interior, the Core features a 100% vegan interior, with faux leather on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels. There’s a memory power driver’s seat with lumbar support, and both driver and passenger seats are heated and feature manual lower seat cushion extensions.

Interior amenities include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with buttons for cruise control, audio, and Bluetooth. Also standard is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate controls with humidity sensor, and ambient interior lighting.

The XC40 Recharge comes with a 9-inch center touchscreen giving access to various features, including audio, electric vehicle information, and available app-related features. Along with Apple CarPlay, the system includes Google built-in, which gives access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store.

The XC40 Recharge has four USB-C ports, two up front and two in the rear.

All this audio goodness comes through a 250-watt 8-speaker Volvo High-Performance audio system.

Optional on the XC40 Recharge Core is a Climate Package that adds a heat pump, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and headlight washers.

With the $1,095 delivery charge, the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Core costs $54,645. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $982. See 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Core models for sale near you

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge trim?

Although expensive, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Ultimate is the best choice, chiefly for its added driver aids, Harman Kardon audio, and available Pixel LED adaptive headlights.

  • How long does it take to charge a 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge?

Using a standard 240-volt Level 2 home charger, the Volvo XC40 Recharge takes about eight hours to replenish its battery. Using a DC fast charging station nets a charge (from 10% to 80%) in about 40 minutes. It is not recommended to fast charge a battery to 100%, hence the 80% cap.

The XC40 Recharge has an estimated range of 223 miles.

Using MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), the EPA rates the 2023 Volvo XC40 recharge at 92 mpge city/79 mpge highway/85 mpge combined.

  • Which 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge trim level offers the most safety?

Although the U.S. government has not crash-tested the Volvo XC40 Recharge, it has crash-tested its hybrid cousin, the XC40. In those tests, the XC40 earned an excellent overall five-star rating.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did test the XC40 Recharge and found it a top performer, scoring the institute’s highest rating of Good in all categories and earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick + accolade.

Due to its advanced driver-assist systems, we’d pick the Ultimate as the safest of the three Volvo XC40 Recharge trims.
