2024 Ford Explorer: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Ford Explorer stretches the boundaries of what a 3-row midsize SUV can be. Its lineup is almost as diverse as the F-150’s, offering eight trims running the gamut from frugal transport (base and XLT) to performance-minded family haulers like the ST and ST-Line. In between, there are the luxury-oriented Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum, and the off-road-capable Timberline.

Powering the base, XLT, Timberline, and Limited trims is a turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine generating 300 horsepower. The King Ranch, Platinum, and ST get a 400-hp twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all but the Timberline, where the other trim’s optional 4-wheel-drive system is standard.

The Explorer’s competition is cutthroat, with newer models like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, long-time rival Chevrolet Traverse, and resale champs Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

What’s New:

Ford dropped the hybrid engine option from the Explorer this year. Other than that, the 2024 Ford Explorer carries over unchanged.

Our Recommendation:

For the budget-minded, the Ford Explorer XLT offers a good combination of price, features, and available upgrades.

Those looking for off-road adventuring will want the Explorer Timberline, while those looking to get pampered should opt for either the King Ranch or Platinum.

2024 Ford Explorer: $36,760

The base Ford Explorer is a rather basic affair, most likely intended for fleet sales and to help establish a low price point. For the money, we’d recommend moving to the XLT trim, which costs only about $2,000 more but brings so much more to the table.

Nevertheless, if you opt for the base model, you’ll get a 300-hp 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission routing power to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is available, and in this configuration, the Explorer is rated to tow up to 5,300 pounds.

Standard features on the base 2024 Ford Explorer include rear privacy glass, a power liftgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, power exterior mirrors, and wiper-activated LED headlights.

Standard amenities include one-touch up/down power front windows, 3-zone automatic climate control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, cloth upholstery, and an 8-way power driver’s seat.

The second row is a split-folding 35/30/35 rear bench that reclines, while the third row divides in a 50/50 split with a fold-flat feature.

The Explorer comes with a 6-speaker AM/FM radio that includes SiriusXM satellite radio. It’s connected to Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, which includes an 8-inch color touchscreen with pinch and zoom capability, FordPass Connect apps, voice recognition abilities, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the safety and driver-assist front, the Explorer comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Also included: automatic high-beam headlights, a driver attention monitor, a rear backup camera, hill descent control, hill start assist, trailer sway control, and rear parking sensors.

Options for the base Explorer include 4-wheel drive (4WD) with Ford’s Terrain Management system, auto start/stop delete, and a Class IV trailer tow package.

With the $1,595 destination charge, the 2024 Ford Explorer comes to $38,355. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $724. See 2024 Ford Explorer models for sale near you

2024 Ford Explorer XLT: $38,570

The XLT is our choice as the best low-cost Explorer. It offers more features plus a more extensive options list.

Interior upgrades include a 6.5-inch color driver information display, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver’s seat, a 4-way power passenger seat, and second-row captain’s chair seating with E-Z entry sliding seats.

The rear seat area contains one USB-A, one USB-C port, and a 12-volt charging port.

The XLT offers several option packages and standalone options. Most notable of those add-ons is Ford’s Co-Pilot360 Assist+, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop/go and lane centering, speed sign recognition, GPS navigation, and evasive steering assist.

The XLT Technology Package adds a 360-degree camera, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, a Class IV trailer tow package, front parking sensors, power-folding side mirrors, and a wireless charging pad.

With the $1,595 destination charge, the 2024 Ford Explorer XLT comes to $40,165. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $758. See 2024 Ford Explorer XLT models for sale near you

The Explorer ST trim is for people who like sharp handling and rapid acceleration, thanks largely to a 400-horsepower 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and a SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission that allows for manual gear changes via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Again, building off the XLT 202A High Package, the ST adds a 20.2-gallon fuel tank, 20-inch aluminum wheels with painted pockets, and blackout treatment for the headlights and taillights.

2024 Ford Explorer ST includes:

Sport suspension – With stiffer shocks and springs, this lowered suspension improves cornering and stability at high speeds.

Configurable digital instrument cluster – This 12.3-inch digital cluster replaces traditional analog gauges with digital reproductions, allowing various display configurations showing things like adaptive cruise control settings, navigation, and vehicle information.

Available Bang & Olufsen upgrades – With a choice of two high-powered B&O audio systems, even the most die-hard audiophile will find something to like.

2024 Ford Explorer King Ranch: $54,525

The 2024 Ford Explorer King Ranch borrows a storied name in Ford history, bringing a rugged western theme to the Limited trim’s standard feature set.
