2024 Ford Mustang: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Ford Mustang continues to run with a very small pack. Along with its lifelong rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Mustang’s modern suspension and engine options make it an American-bred alternative to import sports cars like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A5/S5, Toyota Supra, and Nissan Z.

Ford’s enduring pony car offers varying performance and price in fastback and convertible forms. The significantly revised 2024 car blends the old with the new, touting a high-tech interior in an unmistakable Mustang metal wrapper.

The base EcoBoost trims get a new 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine good for 315 horsepower paired with a 10-speed automatic, while the GT touts a normally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 480 hp paired with a 6-speed manual or available 10-speed automatic.

New for 2024 is the Dark Horse trim. Filling the shoes of last year’s Mach 1, the Dark Horse is a track-ready powerhouse equipped with a 500-hp Coyote V8, a 6-speed manual transmission, and a slew of performance parts aimed at making it the most tenacious Mustang of the bunch.

In a world fast moving toward autonomous electric vehicles, the Mustang stands out as a rebel, unapologetic about its growling, power-happy gas engines, available 6-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel-drive layout.

2024 Mustang EcoBoost Fastback: $30,920

The Mustang EcoBoost is the most affordable galloping horse, offered only in fastback form and with an automatic transmission. Still, there is much to like in the base car, including a host of standard driver-assists included with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 package.

The package includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection with braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.

Co-Pilot360 also adds automatic high-beam headlights, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and a rearview camera.

The Mustang features 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights with sequential turn signals, power side mirrors, and dual bright exhaust tips.

Mustang traditionalists will be pleasantly shocked at the new car’s interior, dominated by a 12.4-inch digital cluster replacing the traditional analog speedometer and tachometer. The panel flows into the 13.2-inch infotainment screen, creating one large, curved display.

As part of the dash makeover, Ford has removed most of the hard buttons and knobs, which will impress some and infuriate others.

The Mustang features manual cloth bucket seats, single-zone automatic climate control, a tilt/telescoping flat-bottom steering wheel, cruise control, one-touch up/down power windows, and Intelligent Access that lets you unlock the doors by touching the handles and start the car with a push of a button.

The Mustang’s infotainment setup includes a 6-speaker FM receiver with MP3 but, oddly, no AM capability. The SYNC 4 system allows integration with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and FordPass Connect features like a Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, and a vehicle locator.

A TrackApps app also stores performance data, such as 0-60 mph times, braking distances, and oil temperature.

Optional on the Mustang is the High Package (101A), which adds a 9-speaker audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio and HD Radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 6-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, heated front seats, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Some popular option packages include the High-Performance Package, which adds a 3.55:1 Torsen limited-slip differential, 19-inch Carbonized Gray alloy wheels with wider rear tires, and a 19-inch Brembo performance brake package.

Additional enhancements include a front strut tower brace, an electric hand-operated “drift” emergency brake, a rear spoiler, heavy-duty front springs, and a performance-tuned suspension and chassis.

The Nite Pony Package brings black exterior trim and wheels, while the Wheel and Stripe Package adds 19-inch wheels and decal stripes to the hood and sides.

With the $1,595 destination charge, the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Fastback costs $32,515. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $614. See 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost models for sale near you

The High Package (301A) adds a 9-speaker stereo, SiriusXM satellite radio, multicolor ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a 6-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support.

Like the base EcoBoost Mustang, the GT offers a Performance Package with additional items like brake cooling vents, an auxiliary engine oil cooler, and differing Torsen differentials depending on the transmission choice.

Options beyond those offered on the Mustang EcoBoost include 19-inch Brembo brakes and unique 19-inch alloy wheels.

  • Available Recaro seats – Legendary seat maker Recaro provides snug-fitting sport seats to hold occupants firmly in place during aggressive cornering. No power adjustments here.

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse: $57,970

The Dark Horse is a new trim for 2024, replacing the Mach 1 as a track-ready Mustang for the serious driver. It features a 500-hp version of the 5.0-liter V8 and a 6-speed manual transmission. A 10-speed automatic remains optional.

Building off the GT High Package (301A) contents, the Dark Horse adds a 19-inch Brembo brake system with 6-piston front brake calipers, a performance exhaust, heavy-duty front springs, adaptive dampers, a gauge package, and oil coolers for the engine, transmission, and differential.

Also getting a unique styling treatment is the cabin, which gets a flat-bottom leather-wrapped heated steering wheel (with suede insert), cloth seats with a 6-way power driver’s seat and 4-way power passenger seat, plus deep indigo seatbelts.

This most potent Mustang also gets the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package, the B&O sound system, and a wireless charging pad.

The Dark Horse is deemed a gas-guzzler by the U.S. government, so tack on another $1,300 for the manual model and $1,000 for the automatic.

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse includes:

  • 500-hp engine – The second most powerful V8 without supercharging ever to grace a Mustang, this engine makes the Dark Horse a bright spot in the Mustang lineup.
  • Brembo brakes – Bigger rotors and calipers by Brembo ensure the Dark Horse can make repeated hard stops without overheating its brakes.
  • Gauge package – The Dark Horse gauge package adds vacuum and oil pressure gauges.

What is the best 2024 Ford Mustang trim?

The Premium trim is a great value and undoubtedly fun, but a Mustang without a V8 doesn’t live up to the legend. We’d go with the GT Premium, toss in a few options, and call it a day.

If spending time at the track is your thing, the Dark Horse is the right choice.

How many miles per gallon does the 2024 Ford Mustang get?

The EPA has yet to release fuel economy figures for the 2024 Mustang, but we imagine they’ll be similar to last year’s model. Look for the EcoBoost with the 10-speed automatic to get around 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway, while the GT is likely to get about 15 mpg city/25 mpg highway with either the manual or automatic transmission.

The Dark Horse number will be a bit lower, enough to qualify it for the government’s gas-guzzler tax.

Which 2024 Ford Mustang trim offers the most safety?

Any 2024 Ford Mustang with the Co-Pilot360 Assist + package offers the best occupant protection and driver assistance.

The Mustang Fastback provides more protection than the convertible due to its solid roof and side-curtain airbag, although the convertible does offer side airbag head protection for the front occupants.
