2024 GMC Terrain: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 GMC Terrain continues to separate itself from newer compact crossovers like the Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-50 by providing a simplified trim lineup with distinctly different personalities.

In the SLE, buyers find a value-oriented SUV that doesn’t skimp on features. The SLT adds a bit more, while the rugged AT4 brings light off-road ability to the fore. The luxurious Denali trim knows few equals, but its pricing puts the Terrain at the upper end of the segment.

A hybrid or plug-in hybrid model is missing from the Terrain lineup, something competitors like the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, and Honda CR-V all offer.

Every Terrain trim employs the same 175-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on the SLE and SLT, with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional, but the AT4 and Denali are AWD-only.

The SLE comes nicely equipped for an entry-level model. Though priced well above most competitors’ base trims, the SLE still slips in well under $30,000, which puts it squarely in reach of most buyers.

With safety on the mind of many customers, it’s nice to know the Terrain makes the GMC Pro Safety suite of driver assists standard.

The package includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a following distance indicator to warn when driving too close to the car ahead.

Further safety features include Rear Seat Reminder (tells the driver to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle) and a rear backup camera. Teen Driver allows parents to generate a report card detailing their teen’s driving habits and set limits on features, such as top speed and radio volume.

The SLE features 17-inch alloy wheels, deep-tinted rear privacy glass, auto on/off LED headlights, an acoustic laminated windshield, and heated power side mirrors.

The Terrain includes a 16-inch compact spare tire, a feature we prefer over a tire repair kit.

GMC’s Keyless Open allows unlocking the doors and liftgate without removing the key fob from your purse or pocket. Once inside, pushing a button is all that’s needed to start the car.

Comfortable cloth upholstery covers manually-adjustable front seats and a flat-folding 60/40 rear seat. Rear cargo bay release levers make it easy to fold the back seat when loading items, while the Terrain’s front passenger seat folds flat, creating a convenient place to park a laptop or lunch.

Rear seat passengers enjoy console-mounted air vents and two USB charge ports.

Some notable SLE amenities include single-zone manual air conditioning, a one-touch up/down driver’s power window, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, and Bluetooth.

The SLE’s standard 6-speaker audio system connects to a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also has a trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio and offers access to GMC connected services, OnStar, and even a Wi-Fi hot spot.

SLE buyers can opt for the new GMC Pro Safety Plus package, which adds adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor with lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic detection, rear parking sensors, and the Safety Alert Seat that vibrates either to the left, right, or center to indicate the direction of a possible collision.

The Driver Convenience Package adds an 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and roof rack side rails.

The Infotainment Package I adds an 8-inch touchscreen, a 4.2-inch color-enhanced display, navigation, HD rear vision camera, four USB ports, an SD card reader, and a 110-volt outlet.

The SLE offers the SkyScape panoramic glass sunroof with a power sunshade, a hands-free power liftgate, several dealer-installed items, and some wheel and exterior styling upgrades.
