The 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe (pronounced four-by-e) puts a modern twist on an old friend. The body-on-frame Jeep Wrangler is as modern as a convection oven, but its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is cutting-edge 21st-century chic.
What makes the plug-in Wrangler 4xe so tempting is its 49 MPGe fuel economy rating and 21-mile all-electric range. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and electric motor produce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, more horsepower than all but the V8-powered Rubicon 392, which also has the same 470 lb-ft of torque figure.
However, realistically, once the electric battery runs down, expect to get around 20 mpg combined.
Beyond its modern powertrain, the 4-door-only Wrangler 4xe looks like the other Wrangler models. Jeep offers its plug-in hybrid this year in six trims: Sport S, Willys, Sahara, High Altitude, Rubicon, and Rubicon X.
The 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe has no direct competition, although Ford is promising a hybrid Bronco is not far off.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe sees several improvements. Side-curtain airbags covering the first and second rows are standard, as is a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. In addition to a new grille and front-end design, the Wrangler 4xe gains forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control with a stop/start feature, and two new trims: Sport S and Rubicon X.
Our Recommendation:
The Sport S provides everything you need in a hybrid Jeep for the best price. However, the Willys or Rubicon trims are better choices if you’re a serious off-roader.

2024 Jeep Wrangler Sport S 4xe: $49,995
The first of six trims, the Sport S is the most affordable Wrangler 4xe and comes surprisingly well-equipped.
On the mechanical side, the Sport S 4xe combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor and a 17.3-kWh battery pack. The 4xe’s total output from this setup cranks up to 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Toss in Jeep’s Selec-Trac full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) and Dana 44 heavy-duty axles, and you have a formidable off-roader.
New safety systems this year include forward collision warning, front and rear side-curtain airbags, and adaptive cruise control. The Wrangler 4xe also has front and front-seat side-mounted airbags, electronic traction and stability control, electronic roll mitigation, hill start assist, a tire-pressure monitor, and a rear backup camera.
A Corning Gorilla Glass windshield lessens the chance of rocks or debris damaging the glass.
The Sport S has full metal doors with power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry with flip key, power heated side mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear privacy glass, and automatic on/off headlights.
The Sport S also features front and rear tow hooks, skid plates covering the fuel tank and transfer case, and a Sunrider soft-top with a sliding sunroof feature.
The cabin gets premium cloth upholstery on manual front seats with 2-way manual lumbar support for the driver. A 60/40-split folding rear seat makes dividing the space between passengers and cargo easy. The bottom cushion lifts to reveal the hybrid battery pack.
Conveniences abound. They include dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, push-button start, removable carpet covering floor drain plugs, and LED lighting everywhere, from the cup holders to the floor wells.
